The reason I love this song is it really does show that John could put his ego aside and shiw off his vulnerabilities when he made music. He knew he wasn't a saint, and wasn't afraid to show his bad side. It shows lots of responsibility too, as this is about his first wife Cynthia, who he abused physically on a few occasions.
