New auction record for the artist Ernie Barnes’ ‘The Sugar Shack’

After Adrien Meyer announced 22 phone lines, a frenzy erupted, resulting in more than 10 minutes of intense bidding. The painting achieved $15,275,000, going for more than 75 times its high estimate.

The fact that it started out in the 100, 000 range and went all the way up to 13 million, speaks volumes, this painting is my childhood, I will never forget it, it would be an honor to see it in person, I hope whoever bought it takes real great care of it

I'll never forget seeing this on the "I Want You" album cover. My favorite Marvin Gaye album and one of my favorite songs of all time. This image: pain and ecstasy, leaving it all on the dancefloor.
And this bid was thrilling to watch!

Christies had NO CLUE how iconic a painting 'The Sugar Shack' was...so, I wasn't surprised...but they were astonished. African-American artists have had their work devalued, ignored and ostracized due to racism for decades!! Now, auction houses, museums and collectors alike are in a mad rush to acquire works from artists of color...not necessarily for aesthetics, but because of the money lost if they don't! Black art is the most under-valued asset class...moreso than gold, stocks, real-estate...all of it. This sale proves it...
