The solution isn't always to have every pin in every size you might conceivably need.

I use taper pins whenever I can. My projects are all small-medium, so I use mainly #3 pins. I like to make a punch mark on the work piece that takes the small end, so I can remember which end to drive it out.

The shear pin on the leads crew was often replaced at the training schools. With students crashing into the chuck Something that all users or owners must find ways to aviod. Could be difference between employment & unemployment. Locking shafts together as you say mistro, many applications.

Good info. Have run into these a bit recently on some old lathes at the plant I work at. Some of the guys don’t know they’re tapered pins and put roll pins in their place. It can be a mess.

Isn’t there two sizes? Morse and Brown & Sharpe? Think I ran into this when I was drilling door handles on a CRJ200 for taper pins. Had the wrong taper angle.

What can you coat the giant reamers and other lesser used tooling in to keep them rust free over long periods of time?

You won't believe me, but I know a guy who can drive these out both ways. The same guy who can create endless left-hand threads with a right-hand tap.

Life as a machine tech would have been a lot easier if people hadn't tried to drive them the wrong way. Seem to remember ⅛" per foot is the taper

Love taper pins, anyone who doesn't just hasnt learned how to work with them and understand them.
Im a gunsmith and use them frequently.
But I also get someone almost once a week that doesnt understand the taper pin and doesnt bother to look at both sides to see if one is smaller than the other and cant figure out how to get them out.
Or if they get lucky and get them out they cant figure out how to get them back in 🤣
Cant fix some people
