I apologize for causing this controversy. It will happen again.

So the anomalocaris` frontal appendages were adapted to grasping but not crushing hard bodied organisms? Seems pretty clear to me the role of anomalocaris in the ecosystem was to give hugs. What a sweetie!

They actually made anomalocaris even cooler! How is that even possible?

anomalocaris AND vampiromorph news in one week?! as a big fan of both groups this has been a very exciting video. thanks for your paleo news, it’s fun to keep up to date on new studies and discoveries!

What if anomalocaris was an ambush predator, staying covered on the see bottom and than launching himself on the prey swimming above. Position of his eyes somehow implies that.

OMG THAT NEW VAMPIROTEUTHID IS SO CUTE! And this makes sense, current species like rays do the same thing with their cephalic horns.

ANY news on the anomalocaris makes my day

That anomalocaris news is amazing. The trilobite hunting never felt right to me and I'd wondered about stuff like jellyfish. Now I can stop looking at it through narrowed eyes for messing with Trilobites.

Great update, as usual, thank you.
Thank you Doug, especially, for the sombre climate information. You struck exactly the tone required.

Wait people thought it was the head appendages that cracked through trilobites? I thought it was obviously not the case, but thought they used their mouth parts for that job.

Getting a glimpse of it true size in your hand was a golden insight;
I never knew how big, or small they were.

No heat wave here in Finland, it looks like it's going to be an unusually cold July here. Much like a typical September. One should never think weather is the same as climate.

Thank you very much for keeping us in the loop! BTW always enjoy that jazzy vibraphone in the backgrond - great choice!

Fun fact about vampyre squid. I often like to rip their eyes out to sew on my vest to use them as hi-vis disks. I tend to do this on Wednesdays . Typically around noon

maybe anomalocaris bite marks were found because trilobites didn't die there for survivor bias, like colossal squid and spearmwhales, tey have the marks because they survive atacks not because they are the prey

And new species of vampiroteuthid

Im so happy Anomalocaris isn't outdated because of its anatomy but because of its behavior. I'd be so sad if it's anatomical presentation in pop culture was wrong like with dinosaurs.

Great video, but what I really want to know is where you got that anomalocaris figure. I want one, and maybe a few trilobites too.
