I totally get it. I tend to get it from too much fried food

Yep. I’m not Chinese but Vietnamese and I definitely understand, my parents always say that Watermelon is cold while fried food and sugary food is hot, cold foods cause stomach aches when eaten without eating a proper starch beforehand and hot foods can cause acne

My grandma says these all the time lol. She’s super sweet and makes pear soup for me when I have a cough.

As an Indian, I get it. I only understood the true power of cooking when my grandma taught me how each ingredient affect us. She taught me how to cook good and healthy food catered specially for my family needs, and for the season.

Id love to put two grandmas in a room with different traditional theories about food effects and have a debate

I grew up with this too. And I've come to realise that different cultures have different concepts of what's 'hot' and what's 'cold' for the body. Meanwhile, my cousins in Australia and the US are eating 'heaty' food (and even cheetos and doritos) without getting coughs/sore throats. So my own conclusion is - everything in moderation, never shy away from anything.

I have also learned about this from my parents!
I heard that durian is the king of fruits but mangosteen is the queen of fruits, durian makes your body hot while mangosteen makes your body cold, they both cancel eachother thats why they’re king and queen😊

my mom is like this way too much like she’ll give me vegetable soup and says “it cool down your body it good for you” and I would just be so confused

Reminds me of my mother who always said i should drink water from durian skin after eating durian. It helps cooling your body if you feel hot from eating durian

I'm not Chinese, but in my parents' culture, there is also a concept of naturally hot or cold foods. Edit: Maybe it's just an Asian parents thing rather than a Chinese parents thing.

In India we too have our share of " hot " and "cold " foods . Strangely, they do affect us in the ways our parents describe them to 🤔

Lychee contain a lot of tannins, which are an astringent, pulling water out of your throat. You can counter this with sweet, juicy foods like, yes, pears, but also other ripe fruits. You can also cook tannins out.

In Chinese culture, you have stuff like 熱氣(re qi, yit hay),寒涼(Han liang, hon leung),which yes, means hot air and cold respectively. 熱氣 doesn’t really mean the temp of your food, but the type? Category of food it falls into. Such as fried foods, grilled or seared food, spicy stuff, and yeah, you get the idea. Stuff that causes ulcers, sore throat, and that uncomfortable dry feeling in your throat after eating fried food. It’s important to know that 熱氣+寒涼 does not equal normal, cause according to Chinese parents, you’ll just get twice the sickness. The pear soup is下火, which means literally’ fire extinguishing’ so yeah, her parents taught her well!

my mom told me to not eat "cold" food when on my period. she says it causes cramps and stuff. I try my best not to drink cold water, always lukewarm water. I can't eat bananas, pears, cucumbers etc. when on my period and I actually don't get bad cramps anymore.

So neat that this is a shared experience across so many different cultures! Both my southern grandma and my Jewish grandma had beliefs about how food affects the body!

I totally get that. As someone from South Indian household. We have this concept too and it kinda works
