My voice is actually *really* deep but because of stress I've been speaking in a higher voice. This was a great reminder and exercise to get my voice back.

As someone who'd be classified as a low bass - if not even profound bass - I want to add some useful knowledge, dangers and tips for everyone, whos interested in this topic:
1. When you're doing an exercise, no matter which one, NEVER push yourself past your limits and don't put strain on your vocal cords. Always stay relaxed. And if a note becomes more breathy, than that's how it is for you. When I started to really dive deep into the lows of my voice and singing low, I pushed myself too much and lost my voice for 14 MONTHS, in which I couldn't talk anymore! So: practise slowly, time will do it's thing, don't push and strain your voice below your limits.
2. You can lower your voice, but also can't. Everyone has very individual limits. Tone, range, everyone is different, because your throat is like it is, your skull is shaped in a certain way, and so on. There are so many things to look at, when it comes to the sound of your voice, not only the vocal cords. That means, that there is a natural limit of what you can achieve. So if you're a Tenor, you most likely can't become a Bass. BUT: everything in your body can be trained, aswell as your voice and the muscles which influence it. So you actually can lower your voice by training and practising, but only to your natural limit. Also by aging your voice will deepen. Not only through the major voice cracck in puberty, also throughout your whole life. A 25 year old will sounds completely different, than a 50 year old, when it comes to color, timbre, resonance, etc. So: if you train your voice to become lower, it also CAN become lower. But only to a certain level. To those who can work with notes: before I started to practise, my lowest chest note was around C2, 2 years later at G1, some time and more practise later even E/D1. Practise and be patient, again time will do it's thing!
3. Some other exercieses you can do which helped me. Only personal experience:
-Start with humming for some time or just throughout the day. The m sound is really easy to project for the vocal cords. If you're trying to warm up, move to more difficult sounds, like s, t and z.
-Take some words (or maybe even just the vowels), that have a, e, i, o or u in them. Start to project and hold those words or vowels for a longer period of time and do that with more power behind it. Don't scream or force, just do it louder (focus on more airflow) and controlled.
-In the beginning of this video, he was talking about another video he did and you could see him blow inside a straw, which he held in water. I don't know if there are any other names, but here we call that "Lax Vox". I came across this, when I injured myself and had to go into therapy for my voice. This is something I recommend everyone to do, it warms up your voice, also relaxes it, makes it smoother. It's basically like a massage for your vocal cords. There are also some specific, thicker straws you should use, but just go ahead and use whatever you've to. You'll find a lot about that if you search for it.
-As easy as it sounds: start using your lows. If you're a singer, sing stuff lower. And even if you are not, you can still just go up and down the scales and stop, when you're at your lowest, don't push!

And now: For everyone, who loves lower voices and music, I just wanna let you know, that there is amazing stuff you should listen to. Since it's not that known, I wanna take a moment and share it with you. Keywords you should really look up are "basso profundo" and "octavist". Amazing stuff!

I realised that I've just been speaking in my high voice the entire time.
I was a quiet kind of person so i spoke softly and higher to make myself less threatening because someone who's quiet and has a deep voice is quite scary to a lot of people.
I realized this about 3 months ago when i took a deep breath and just spoke from that place.

Deep breathing is the key for me to be able speak deeply. It is also linked with control - relaxation and contraction - of our muscles generally.

My technique:
1. First relax yourself as much as you can, slow down and don't drink any coffee + minimize sugar intake.
2. When you speak draw you voice up from your stomach. It might take a while to perfectly control your stomach contractions, but after few days you will get the feeling that's just right for deeper voice and it will become natural for you.

3. Contract those little muscles located where your neck meets the jaw. They are on both sides of the neck and when you contract them, your voice will become much deeper, but don't do it when you are speaking for extended periods of time as it is kind of like a sand-paper for your vocal cords and you might need to cough quite frequently to ease the tension.
4. Grow a beard. It might sound counter-intuitive, but by growing a beard you will feel more masculine and your brain is trained to satisfy the image you are going for, so you will intuitively start speaking deeper without even thinking about it.

Make sure not to force or strain.

Everything should feel comfortable, but there can be a slight feeling of pressure. This is ok, but there shouldn’t be a lot going on with your neck muscles.

Believe me… you don’t want that…

If the neck muscles are firing up and tensing a lot, then they are compensating for other muscles that are too weak. They end up taking over for the weak muscles and this is very bad.

Starting with lower volume is a good way for you to avoid this.

Once you’ve mastered something in low volume, then you can gradually increase your volume, which will increase the pressure, as well.

Any pressure you feel should be below the neck.

This is just a guideline for those that feel like they’re straining. Which usually happens when trying to be louder than what their voice can handle.
