Absolutely brilliant and spot on. I feel money can be like mental health: so easy to hide and fuel the shame which is never helpful.

Sooo true Jen! Believe it or not, even the positive side is "shamed"! I worked hard, cut corners when I could, lived a good life, but not extravagant life. So by the time I got to age 64, I could retire comfortably. I can't tell you how many family and friends make side-comments about my "wealth" (I'm NOT wealthy) or my "life of leisure" in Palm Springs (which costs alot less to live in than L.A. or Orange Counties!). I feel that I am embarrassed or shamed by others because I purposely tried to make long-term smart financial choices for 30+ years which, yes, I do benefit from today. OK.... stepping down from my soap box. 😊

You're truly one of the best Jen. I consider you my YouTube mom. Thank you for this.

You have a real talent for getting right to the heart of things in my life and we have never met. I am proud of myself in all areas of life with the exception of money and career. I have no problem talking about money but a big problem accepting the financial situation that I have created at 57 years old. This video was incredibly helpful - like I just had a relaxing cup of tea and some comfort from a wise and wonderful friend. Thank you and please keep doing these videos. Hopefully you know how much you help people who you don’t even know. 💛

Jen, Thank you so so much ! I'm 56 yrs. Old and I have a small 401k. I'm planning a trip to Orlando Florida for Disney and Universal for my 18th yr. old son's graduation. I'm in the process of finding a travel agent for payment plans to make our dreams come true on a stress-free travel budget.

I so needed to hear this. Thank you! The more I read and listen to people like Dave Ramsay the worse I feel which leads to shopping and more overspending to feel better. Its a horrible cycle.

Thank you, Jen. Excellent point. I’ve often thought about why we are all feeling so ashamed to say, “I can’t afford that”. Seems simple but you’re right.

I recent heard Jimmy Smitz say his mother was poor and would give money to the church to help someone like her and it spoke to me. I do believe we need to help others and encourage ourselves to be better w money

Great message! All the tactics in the world won’t help if you can’t get past this first!

I love the Financial Diet! I made plenty of stupid money decisions when I was younger and feel proud of how much better I am with money now (except when it comes to Disney) but I still feel annoyed by our capitalistic society at least once a week!! The people working the hardest all too often have the least and then also have to feel the guilt and shame and stress associated with the money that they do have. I have no idea what the answer to those problems are, I just hope there are some great economists out there working on it.

Oh my goodness did I need to hear this! Thank you! I’m looking to buy my first home in my late 30’s - a little later than most. No one in my immediate family has ever owned a home so I’m in such a weird mental state about spending this much money. Thank you!! 💕

I was hoping you would speak on money one day, and was thrilled to see the new video. It did not disappoint. I will be watching this one over and over as needed. So much truth.

I cannot explain how much this hit with me. I was afraid to even watch the video because I KNOW I've made some major bad calls in the past that led to me to where I am now. I normally feel like if I'm not constantly denying myself in some way that I'm doing things wrong and I'm a failure. Thank you so much for posting this, it really did give me a new perspective on the day.

Thankyou for being so honest with this Jen, money is always a taboo subject. When I was in a debt spiral, a friend of mine reminded me that I still need to have a life. and the shift in outlook enabled me to repay all my debts (over an eight year period) and not have the stigma that went with the debt shame. The middle ground is much better for a mental outlook than only paying off the debts but feeling that dark cloud hanging over me. And this was in the days before youtube where I thought I was the only person dealing with this.

This is honestly a great video. I have student and credit card debt and then am hoping to get a condo at some point and I used to have so much shame. I am now starting to slowly rebuild my credit and so much of that came from unlearning my shame. I know one guru who has really helped my mindset lately is the millennial coach and that probably is because she is a neurodivergent millennial like myself. I find finding gurus that you can relate to and who don’t focus on scarcity and shame is such an important practice.
