Its a bit smaller than we expected... - Xiaomi 12s Ultra Camera Sensor Teardown!

Xiaomi has a REALLY big camera... lens. But is the Camera itself as large as they say? They only way to find out for sure is to open it up and measure it for ourselves! Today we are taking apart the brand new flagship 12s Ultra from Xiaomi. We are going to measure the worlds largest smartphone sensor - and see how big it really is. Is Xiaomi's "true one inch sensor" really 1 inch? I have my doubts...

I wouldn’t say that sensor is ‘smaller than expected’, I’d say it’s around average size, and probably has a great personality!

Small camera sensor naming conventions are fairly insane. Small sensors are named after the dimensions of a hypothetical glass tube that would surround the sensor, as if they were a 1950's Vidicon tube. Typical 1" sensor size is actually 13.1 x 9.8mm.

4:27 I think the periscope camera is really exciting tech. With that much zoom, you need optical stabilization, and how they did it here with moving the prism is really cool!

thanks for showing us the real size of the sensor, and thanks especially for explaining how even though it's not really one inch, it's still "one inch" 😂

Now here's a thought. Switching inch measurements over to rectangle diagonal instead of tube diameter would just confuse everyone.
What if, hear me out, we switched to centimeters instead. Since no one measures in centimeters right now there'd be no confusion AND you could switch to a better way of measuring like diagonal, area or circumference

its weird to see that the big camera isn't the one in the center

Fantastic disassembly. Especially interesting to see camera modules disassembled. Please keep doing it.

The sensor size measurement is from old times. At that time only 2/3 from 1 inch was usable. So diagonally 1inch is 16mm. This counts for all camera sensor measurements

The silicone back looks nice, would definitely prefer it over glass because glass is glass and glass breaks

When it comes to cameras a 1 inch sensor is never truly a full inch in any direction of measurement, the one inch is referring to the size of vacuum tube the sensor would have fit into, back when vacuum tubes were used in cameras.

Measuring the image sensor by the size of a theoretical circle that it can fit in *does* still make sense and will continue to make sense for as long as the lenses are circular. The "1 inch" size of the sensor defines the characteristics of the lens that you will need in order to be able to have a full-frame image without a vignette.

I didn't know about the tube measurement until the MKBHD video but I think it's best to stick with it. Since it's widely used and while I know bigger is better, I don't know how big is how good.
Being able to compare this to other sensors using the same measurement is probably more important than me knowing the physical dimensions of the sensor.
I just got my 12s Ultra and the camera is pretty sick.
Not a huge amount better than the 11 Ultra but better than any other smartphone I've tried.

The size of matrices in smartphones is measured not by an ordinary inch, but in vidicon inch, and he = 2/3 of classic inch
