Bishop Score
It is a score used widely to determine if the cervix of the pregnant lady is ready for labour, a procedure in which labour is facilitated artificially through various means, would be successful or not.
It utilizes 5 factors , namely :
1) Cervical dilation
2) Effacement
3) Consistency of cervix
4) Position
5) Station
Cervical dilation is an increase in diameter of the cervix
Cervical effacement is the shortenjng and thinning of the cervix
Cervical consistency is the feel of the cervix
Position refers to the position of the fetus in relation to maternal pelvis
Station refers to the position of the fetus in relation to the ischial spine of the maternal pelvis
Each factor has a score range of 0-3 except for consistency and position which only have score range of 0-2. The total minimum score is 0 while total maximum score of all factors is 13. A score above 8 is considered favourable for vaginal delivery or induction of labour.
For scoring purpose, there is a need for performing per vaginal examination . Thus it is contraindicated in placenta previa and in patients prone for premature rupture of membrane.
