A look at this stunning feat of lyricism. (Can you count how many times I say "beautiful"?)

Thanks to @Per Kristian Hoff for the recommendation!

An amazing work by the incomparable Anne Carson. 'The Beauty of the Husband' was my intro to her work, a must-read, as is most of her works.

The first Chinese translation of Carson's work - Short Talks - came out last year (I'm from Hong Kong); I was struck by its originality+depth. Now I gonna read Red and Beauty of the Husband, probably in both languages. Thank you for your presentation :)

Nice to see you cover Carson. That Holderlin book looks enticing. Happy holidays!

So glad you enjoyed it, and what a treat to have such an engaged analysis (just in time to watch it before Christmas dinner). Lovely examples you pick, I'll add page 94. "Thank you, said Geryon and bit into an olive. The pimiento stung his mouth alive like sudden sunset. He was hungry and ate seven more, fast. Smiling a bit Lazer watched him. You eat like my daughter. With a certain shall I say lucidity. How old is your daughter? asked Geryon. Four-not quite human. Or perhaps a little beyond human. It is because of her I have began to notice moments of death. Children make you see distances."
I've been looking for a nice hardcover of that Hölderlin, maybe this is the push I need to give up and get the paperback.

Ahhh lovely analysis, the “love does not make me gentle or kind” is a rush of self reflection in such a poetic ‘snapshot’ 😉

And here I am once again. Seeking more and almost the right Carson to start out with just for me.

This book is on my next book's list to read along with the nickel boys by colson whitehead and the largesse of the sea maiden by denis johnson. Very good presentation of the book! Happy holidays!

Are you familiar by chance with Jon Fosse's Septology and
A Shining. Fosse channel Meister Eckhart, Becket, Dante, and Augustine. Every bit as engaging as Carson. I adore both!!

Great stuff! I think Updike had a nice description of the blurring between awake and asleep but I can remember where. Roger's Version?

And Paul West's In Defense of Purple Prose speaks to my soul. What's the alternative? Gray prose? No, thanks!

I spy Europe Central and I Married a Communist.

I stumbled upon your channel recently and I love it!! I’m watching through your Proust series now and it made me wonder if you’ve read The Albertine Workout by Carson. If I remember it’s only 40 pages and a fun little read
