This technique was developed in the 40s by Rheinmetall to make barrels for the MG42.

You notice that the so called fingerprint of the rifling was the most important issue in this video. This technique for identifying is flawed. No longer admissible in court.

interesting. never seen it done like that. Usually they take a piece of solid bar stock and drill and ream a hole and then force a riffling button down it.

Note that ballistic fingerprinting accuracy is now under considerable debate (always best to check for current status) but has great popular appeal for obvious reasons (marketing).
