The date of this reel is a 1966. The EE on the side is the date code. Also fill that reel up to 1/8 of an inch of the outside of the spool with line and it will cast much much better and retrieve much faster! Great video and keep them coming.

How many people here see a Brendan Miller video pop up and just automatically click on it? Me.

Fishermen today are sooo spoiled! I remember the old old stuff my grandpa had to use in the 60's when they were poor as church mice and had to fish for their supper. Steel rods, wooden plugs (they were called plugs back then) and braided dacron lines. The water sprayed off the line when they would cast or retrieve. They still managed to catch some whopper pike and muskies and big stringers of perch and pickerel too. I also remember the family fish fry Sunday dinners too!😊

The Heddon River Runt “Spook” refers to the fact that it was made in plastic, originally the River Runt was made in wood. BTW- both versions and many Heddon lures are collectibles. Some of the plastic “Spook” versions can be very valuable for rarer colors. Yours was perfect bc it was in used condition and perfect for fishing. They catch fish now just as good as they did new. I love old gear and much of it was actually made in the USA which is why it’s still around today. Great job on your video and you kept pushing on no matter what obstacles you ran into! The success!! Awesome. Love to see more like this, maybe go back by decades fishing a setup from each—-well....on second thought that might get expensive eventually as the gear becomes more and more valuable and collectible (of course depending on the make/model/condition).

That's very awesome! fishing with old gear is an experience into the past and it's very fun. I'll be doing some vintage fishing myself soon! 👍

Sixty years ago I fished with my old uncles who only used bait casting reels paired to spring steel rods. Their rods were spooled with braided Dacron line. It was extremely limp line that made the bait casting experience more tolerable. I never developed the knack for casting those old school reels. When technology advanced to the point of the free spool bait casting I splurged and bought a Daiwa Millionaire 3HM in 1977. It casted like a dream with no backlash. Still have that reel and it still gets the job done. As an added note: You can buy a replacement metal ferrule to fix that problem. A friend of mine built a new bait casting rod using a metal ferrule made of aluminum.

Very nice.
I have boxes of my grandpa's tackle and lures. I'm scared to use it lest I snag and lose them. I need to build display cases for them.
Thanks for taking us along on your vintage experiment.
I foresee that new farm pond being the setting for some future episodes.
Also:
Yes, Brendan, you *are* a hipster in rural Ohio. 👍🏼
I'm going to Wolf Run Lake tomorrow. You're invited.

Actually used one of those antique plugs today without knowing how old it is! It is a Heddon tiny floating runt, and I caught 2 bass! Goes to show you, old lures CAN still catch fish in modern times!

You should do more vintage fishing videos. You should go to flea markets and garage sales and by vintage gear and use it. Awesome video by the way 👍👍
