A History of Royal Pets

Man’s best friend and King’s most loyal subject. Dogs, cats and other pets have long been beloved companions of royalty and nobility. And many of the breeds we know today came in to existence by royal command. From a terrier who was faithful unto her Queen’s bloody end to the pug who ruined Napoleons wedding night. From the cats that ruled the palace of Versailles to Elizabeth’s beloved corgis, Let’s take a look at the pampered lives of royal pets through the centuries.

I make mini documentaries about women's history and royal history:

I knew the Queen stopped breeding Corgis, but was unaware Beatrice and Eugenie gave her a new one following the death of Prince Phillip. Such a sweet and caring gesture, one I'm sure meant very much to Her Majesty.

The saddest thing ever: the dogs accompanying their owners to their execution probably wouldn’t leave them because they could smell that they were under extreme stress.

Do you think some of Henry VIII's courtiers had dogs handy for when Henry was in one of his infamous rages to try and calm him down?
Henry VIII: OFF WITH HIS HEA *sees a dog who wants a belly rub* who's a good boy? Who's the King's favourite boy? You are! Yes you are! Yes you are!

Showing this to my 230 pound mastiff so he knows how fierce his ancestors were. The other day he farted so loud it scared him and he had to be cuddled to calm back down.

This woman has a supernatural ability to slide in an advertisement in such a silky smooth way, that by the time you realise you're in an ad break, she's nearly half way through and and you don't feel the urge to FF to the end.

Such a unique talent, I've never seen someone as skilled as she is at this. 👌🏼

There's something so endearing about the fact that even royals, who have luxuries most of us can't even imagine, still find their lives aren't complete without puppies and kitties. It's just adorable.

Queen Mary’s dog stayed with her till the bitter end. Talk about a loyal dog.

the ottomans obsession and fondness for cats has developed over the generations into a full-blown aspect of turkish culture, especially around instanbul. the first thing you notice about the city is how many stray cats there are and how well they are taken care of by the locals.

Being the pet of a royal or noble is possibly the best life you can have, I feel. All of the luxury, with no responsibilities. Just being spoiled and cuddled all day.

I cried watching Marie Antoinnette when they took away her dog. Like let her keep the dog

Heard a fun saying once “God made cats so humans could have the pleasure of petting tigers”. 😺

Love that Larry was mentioned for 10 Downing St. There is also a mouser at the treasury office. His name is Gladstone.

God this video is so perfectly timed...About a year ago me and my sister had to put down our beloved puppers Lulu. We had her for 10 long years and she was the best little companion...I miss her more than anything

Napoleon chose the easier route.

I think my favourite (by favourite, I mean saddest) royal pet story is the Romanov dogs. When they were taken to Yekaterinburg both Anastasia and Alexei had dogs that came with them. (Olga also had a cat that they had to leave behind) when the family was murdered, Anastasia's dog Jimmy (she called him 'Jip') was shot along with his human, but Alexei's dog was found the next morning, apparently missed by the assassins. He was adopted by friends of the family and lived a long life. This is possibly why 20th century fox gave Anya a little dog as a companion in 'Anastasia'
