Abstract:

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born on July 18, 1918, in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, which was then a part of South Africa's Thembuland, is one of the most renowned individuals in the global fight for equality and human rights. Mandela, who is always referred to as "Madiba" an isiXhosa word meaning “father”, had a life that embodies the unbreakable spirit of fortitude, justice, and leadership (Boehmer, 2023). Growing up in a South Africa where apartheid, a system of institutionalized discrimination and racial segregation was deeply ingrained , Mandela's early years were shaped by the harsh reality of systematic injustice. With legal training under his belt, he actively opposed the oppressive rules that made most people second-class citizens by getting involved in anti-apartheid activities.  Mandela played a crucial role in the fight against apartheid because of his leadership inside the African National Congress (ANC) and his dedication to non-violent resistance. But his unwavering opposition to racial injustice would ultimately result in his arrest in 1962 and 27 years of incarceration on Robben Island.
