My mom survived the Spanish Flu/1918 Flu. My mom was born in February, 1918 (Valentines Day). Her whole family lived on a farm out in the "country" (rural) in NE Florida, US. They grew most of their own food, had a smokehouse, raised their own cattle/animals for meats, and also "canned" (jars) foods, like meats & gravy, fruits, & vegetables. There wasn't a lot they had to buy from "town" the "big city" about 20+ miles away. This lessened their chances of catching contagious diseases.
But, they still caught the 1918 flu. The whole family & almost everyone on the farm caught it, & were very sick. Everyone caught in except one older bachelor uncle, and my toddler mom caught it. My grandma had to stop breast-feeding my mom, and old uncle carried her around in his arms, fed her cows milk, and nursed everyone else back to health.
Neither Mom nor the uncle ever displayed any symptoms of this Flu. We wondered if, perhaps, Mom had gotten (temporary?) antibodies from Grandma thru breast-milk or close contact, etc.
Mom always said she'd "survived" the 1918 Flu. She never did get sick from it in subsequent years. In fact, she lived on til 2011, til she was 93 years old.

Fun fact: the Spanish flu came from the US. They did not want the stigma and could not blame it on their allies or enemies so they pick Spain because they were neutral in the war (they were going through their own shit at the time) and also had high death rates from the flu.

Spitting on sidewalks is also illegal in Australia bx they had a terrible TB outbreak.

My Aunt was 17 with her family in San Francisco: she said they had to wear masks. And house had chalk 'X's' on front door to tell others stay away.

I wish this was still a law, I do not like to see people spit or lick their fingers! I have seen cashiers do it to count money and open the plastic grocery bags!🤢

People still lick their fingers today I can't tell you how many times I've gone to check out my groceries and they lick their fingers to open the bags and then they touch all my groceries with that spit. It makes me so angry. So I would always say you know what you need is some tacky fingers because if you stick your fingers in your mouth your going to get a disease cuz you're touching all this stuff I just make it about them.
