From the 1990 Legendary Masters Series cd of Gary Lewis and the Playboys, here is Gary and his band doing David Gates' song "Face In a Crowd." It was recorded January 16, 1966 with Leon Russell as arranger and piano player. The master tape was culled from Take seven, and here it includes the opening studio chatter. It is followed by the album version on Gary's album Hits Again! The song was covered by Matthew Moore soon after for a single on Capitol Records. Matthew later worked with Leon as part of Joe Cocker's ensemble for the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour in spring 1970, and he wrote the song "Space Captain," which was among the songs Joe had on his play list during that tour. David Gates had meanwhile arranged "Face In The Crowd," (as it was also titled) for Glenn Yarbrough's 1968 album The Bitter And The Sweet. David and Leon had worked on several songs for Glenn after he left The Limeliters and went solo in 1964.

The beginning of this song sounds like a cold play song
