Mississippi (other than Jackson) is a wonderfully peaceful place to live. Low cost of living, cheap land, southern hospitality, beautiful topography and rich with culture and access to major interstates.

The price of political corruption through patronage is significantly higher than the cost of private profits.

One other thing I think politicians forget is they still have to participate in the free market despite the fact they’re government workers. If they don’t raise the water prices accordingly they will tun out of money, sure. But if they fail to address crime, poverty, and other issues that make people want to leave then they lose revenue. A large portion of those who didn’t leave the city are poor and dependent on government services to live. In otherwords, the people who haven’t left aren’t paying much if anything into the system, they’re just feeding off of it. The politicians are running a failing business model and blaming the free market, capitalism, and anybody but themselves.

Jackson's water should be put into receivership in order to fix problems without the interference of local politicians. If state law doesn't allow for that then changing that may be how the state can help.

Can speak to this from experience. The city of Jackson, especially the southern part and the Capitol area are run down and dangerous. Roads are the worst in the state, they’ve had water and waste management issues for years. The recent flooding only exacerbated the problem to a critical degree. 30 years+ of political corruption and the city leaders doing NOTHING for the people within Jackson. They’re was even a 1% tax increase in recent years to fix these issues. Yet the same problems persist and there are just excuses given. And this is the capitol of the state, yet it doesn’t reflect the rest of the state in any real way. Yet if you cross over to neighboring Rankin County (where I lived for 7 years) or north of Jackson in other parts of Hinds County, it’s the opposite. These places are nice, wonderful places to live and raise a family.

The problem is not racism, it's a mix of rampant crime, city government corruption and incompetence. Crime and high taxes have chased residents and businesses out of the city and unfortunately most of the people who are left are the ones who don't have the means to leave. The north border of the Jackson city limits is a road called County Line Road and is a shopping area. The south side of the road is the city of Jackson and most of the shopping and restaurants have shuttered mostly due to high taxes. The north side of the road is a suburb in a different county with lower taxes and better policing and it is mostly thriving.

isn't it weird that the more black a city is, the worse it gets?
