I used to play in peaceful mode because I was scared, but now I like it better when it's not on peaceful mode because it adds so much possibility and extra challenges to the game. But there's nothing wrong with being on peaceful. I definitely understand why peaceful mode is appealing because mobs can be annoying (especially creepers)

I played on a realm that was on peaceful (I was unaware of that) I was very surprised seeing my hunger not go down until I finally realized. Great video as always🙂

to answer the question, they added hunger in 1.8, but food was added before (can't find when) and restored health directly.
