A talk by Tristan Swedish, CEO of Ubicept, about photon counting technology and the role of advanced processing to allow for novel machine perception techniques in settings that would challenge traditional cameras. This talk was given in November 2023 to the New England Section of Optica (Formerly the Optical Society of America).

"As co-founder and CTO of Ubicept, I'll share the story about how a neat way to think about light grew from an academic lab project into a VC-backed startup with the potential to change how machines "see" the world. While conventional exposure-based imaging typically makes a trade-off between low-light sensitivity, high-speed acquisition, and dynamic range, Ubicept's technology can overcome these conventional trade-offs using high-resolution single-photon counting arrays. By digitizing light at its quanta, photons, single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays can be used to capture images with enormous dynamic range, eliminate motion blur, and see in near darkness. I'll present the basic principles of this approach with videos of real scenes captured using Ubicept's SPAD based camera and applications of this technology for difficult machine perception problems in the mobility and industrial automation markets."
