I've watched the full IMAX version. The best theatre experience in my life so far. DUNE is a masterpiece. If DUNE is in the cinema again, I will definitely go watch the full version again and again. Can't get enough of it.

Remembering back to the days when the situation was reversed. Theatrical films were shot in widescreen and had to be cut down to fill the screens for Standard Def TVs. They'd loose massive amounts of visuals off the edges or sometimes be squished in to preserve wide title sequences. That became a style in and of itself. Now with IMAX, it's the theatrical widescreens that are the bottleneck. With streaming I think all films should be released in 2 versions. One for the entertainment of the general public that fills the screen and doesn't leave them asking why there are big black boxes on their giant expensive 85" 4K HDTVs. Another for true cinephiles that maintains the aspect ratio the film was originally shot in and/or was desired by the director. I understand someone like Villeneuve wants people to see his work in an actual IMAX theater but they still aren't all that common in the world nor cheap. Seeing a work of art in it's truest form should always be a goal but getting it to be seen by the largest numbers as close to it's truest form as possible should be considered as well.

Thinking of my own experience, I grew up in a small West Texas town. The nearest theater was 90 miles away. In 1983 I was 13 and the movie Bladerunner had its Network Broadcast TV premier on the CBS Movie of the Week. I watched it in my room on a 5", Standard Def, black and white TV and still new it was the most beautiful movie I had ever seen or would see for a great long while. It was another 4 years before I got to see it in color on VHS and years more before I saw it in widescreen.

Seeing works like these as close to there original intended form can be more than simply beautiful. They can be informative, educational, even inspirational. Much more than something that's been trimmed to fit an arbitrary screen.

Saw it 2x normally and 2x in IMAX. I am still blessed to have witnessed the greatest cinimatic experience of the past decade. I truly can't express how surreal IMAX was. I was skeptical of how much it truly made a difference, but Denis understands the value of scoop and cinematography. When Dune Messiah releases it should be a REQUIREMENT to watch it in IMAX at least once. These types of films only come around a few times in a lifetime.

The home media release of this movie and Blade Runner 2049 is a disgrace and a gigantic middle finger to their audience, saying "thanks for your money, suckers!"
