What if you press 'park' while driving a tesla model 3

I accidentally hit park while driving my tesla model 3 at 5 mph instead of autopilot. I wanted to try and engage autopilot at 5 mph to see if it works but instead, the car's brake was automatically applied and it came a full stop in the middle of the road. This got me thinking, what happens if I was driving at 50 mph or 30 mph? this could be dangerous.

You need to press and hold it to apply emergency brake. It will use parking brakes to stop a car

Every car needs a emergency brake. They just use the park brake for a emergency stop. You always have to hold the button (with an electric park brake) to activate the emergency brake.

I’ve been a a bit worried about what would happen if I accidentally hit the park button, so thanks for this.

You must /hold/ the button. As it states in the Tesla Owner’s Manual which, sadly, less than 0.01% of owners ever read, that will activate the parking brakes at any speed which—as others have stated—is required by law. (All cars are required to have a secondary braking system for emergencies.) I have tested this on my Tesla Model S while traveling about 60 mph: you get gentle deceleration; when you let go, it lets go. The small, electric screw-drive parking brake calipers are much less powerful than the large, four-piston hydraulic main brakes. When you’re going slowly, the little brakes will jar you to a stop, but at speed, they offer gentle braking. They will bring you to a complete stop if you keep holding the button.

Yes I think you need to hold the park button for it to do anything.

It’s a terrible design. I have hit it a bunch of times by accident because on my other family cars that is for wipers and wiper fluid. I just held it down this morning while driving to wash windshield and it suddenly locked on the emergency brake, which was dangerous on the road I was on. The park/reverse/drive should never be in an ambiguous place, as it is on my model 3. Should be in a different location that other cars don’t use for something else

Parking when your car is still moving is bad because you are using the transmission to stop the car not the brakes

Thanks! I was wondering the same thing.

Do you get a different result when the car is in neutral, not drive?

The car is smarter than you ! You have to press and hold the park button.

You could also possibly mess the transmission up, damage it or possibly even ruin it
