Gary L. Heilig retired Michigan State University Horticulture Educator discusses 3rd year training (pruning) of an apricot tree
During the 3rd year, you can see that most of the growth is at the top of the tree. Our goal this year is to prune the major branches by removing upward and downward growing wood, dead branches, crossing branches, suckers at the base of the plant, and by making bench cuts to continue to encourage outward growth.

Thank you! This is the first video that made sense to me, as a novice who planted 2 apricot trees with no idea what I was doing. Mostly I chose apricot trees for nostalgia since I had one when I was a young child, growing up at my parent’s home.

Greetings from California,
Thank you Gary for a new, excellent training/pruning video.

Every time I bring up your channel I think you are better.

Thanks for the emphasis on bud direction, for standing back now and then to inspect the work, and for the details of branches to leave or remove.
This is how I have done it in my business since the '80s.

Sir, you are appreciated.

I've been pruning roses for decades, and have shaped orange trees, but this will be my first year with a young apricot and two plums. I see the basic philosophies are the same. I appreciate how detailed you are with explaining your thought process, but also encourage people not to be afraid, and just "do it".

You are making the best pruning videos I've ever watched. Very informative and detailed! Thanks a lot!
(You've made us curious about the apricot trees blooming or not; please keep us updated.)

Thank you so much for a very explanatory video! I have a young 3-year-old apricot tree that has many small spindly branches going everywhere off of the main branches. Now I have a good idea of what I need to do.

Of all my fruit trees APRICOT is one I hate to prune, it seems like the more I prune the bigger the tree gets. Also flowers way too early. seems like I'm not getting any apricot fruit like you this year, we surpose to get a couple of inches of snow tonight and the flowers are in full bloom.

One question....if the winter was cold are the young trees less likely to fruit? We went down to -26
