Dallas Cowboys news and rumors after Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Season! The Cowboys beat up on the Browns, winning 33-17 and Cowboys Report host Tom Downey has some final thoughts from the win on:
- Mazi Smith’s play
- Jake Ferguson injury news
- Tyler Guyton & Cooper Beebe’s play vs. the Browns
- Mazi Smith’s impact
- Cowboys’ secondary played great

Cowboys injury news: Jake Ferguson suffered a sprained MCL and a bone bruise against the Cleveland Browns. Dallas won’t rule him out of Week 2 yet, but it probably makes more sense to NOT play him.

Tyler Guyton stats vs. the Browns: 63 Snaps, 1 sack, 0 hits, hurry, 49.1 run block grade
Cooper Beebe stats vs the Browns: 63 Snaps, 0 sacks, 0 hits, 0 hurries, 71.6 run block grade

The Cowboys secondary played GREAT vs. the Browns. Here’s what the PFF stats showed:
- Jourdan Lewis: 4 REC/5 TGT, 14 Yards, 0 TD, 0 1st Downs, 0 PBU
- Trevon Diggs: 6 REC/9 TGT, 23 yards, 1 INT, 0 1st Downs, 2 PBU
- Caelen Carson: 5 REC/9 TGT, 44 yards, 1 TD, 2 PBU, 4 1st Downs

There’s probably not much to gather from Mazi Smith’s play: 5 run defense reps on 23 total snaps. But, if the run defense did it’s job, that probably means he played well.

Cowboys 2024 NFL Draft Picks:
RD1, 29 overall - Tyler Guyton (OT, Oklahoma)
RD2, 56 overall - Marshawn Kneeland (EDGE, Western Michigan)
RD3, 73 overall - Cooper Beebe (OL, Kansas State)
RD3, 87 overall - Marist Liufau (LB, Notre Dame)
RD5, 174 overall - Caelen Carson (CB, Wake Forest)
RD6, 216 overall - Ryan Flournoy (WR, Southeast Missouri State)
RD7, 233 overall - Nathan Thomas (OL, Louisiana)
RD7, 244 overall - Justin Rogers (DT, Auburn)

The Cowboys are more likely to win if you like the video. Don't be the guy who causes a loss!

Absolutely rest Ferguson for a couple weeks. Better to have him later on fully healthy.

I’d say we are fine with Luke schoonmaker as starting TE, just sit out Ferguson for a week or two and let schoonmaker show us what he’s capable of.

Liked seeing the aggressiveness and tackling by the defense. Kendrick is perfect for the linebacker room . Leadership, and making plays Overshone is gonna be a really good player. Speed, tackling abilities, I was impressed. We have a real LB core this year. Didn’t look like the Commanders defense looked too good. Hey Dan, turn your hat around, you look like a middle aged college punk. You’re a head coach in the NFL

He is a big part of the offense, but he really didn't do much leading up to the injury. Rest him, get healthy

I’ll say it all season…get Luepke the ball! He finds yards and heads for the chains. 2 catches for 19 yards and he was out there 20 snaps

If I was the Cowboys, I would not play Ferguson on Sunday because you dont want to injure that knee snything mlre than it already is now. As far as the game yesterday, it was a team win for sure. The defense was outstanding and even if Willis and Conklin played yesterday, they still would have sacked Watson more than 6 times. The Cowboys only had like 2 INTs yesterday even thoguh that there should be more but Im really haooy about making stops on defense. They held that Browns rushing attack to 93 yards on the ground which that would be 3.3 ypc and thats fantastic. The run defesne to me looks very much improved even if Mazi didnt play that much. When you have guys like Phillips, and Joseph as depth, thats a recipe for success. The CBs played a great game even though Carson got beat a few times but not alot. I was really happy about Diggs getting that INT late in the game which thats a welcome sight because we need him on defense. Overall, that was a great performance for the Cowboys against a really good Browns team even if they didnt have their top 2 tackles on their O line.

The focus now is to move onto the Saints and Im actually looking forward to this matchup. Yes even though that the Saints put up 47 points off of a JV team in the Panthers yesterday, they still could be a dark horse this year in the NFC. I do believe that the Cowboys are gonna be better on offense this week even if I have them win by 11 points but I really do like what I see from this roster despite the RB room being bad. What will be key though in this matchup is Lamb vs Lattimore (if he plays) because thats gonna be an elite matchup going in. Overall I have the Cowboys winning against New Orleans and win by this score:

Cowboys 24
Saints 13

I would not play Jake Ferguson in wk 2. Rest him let him practice a little bit. Let's see who can come in and get the job done. And we do have the backups. Let him go through therapy.

9 not 10 because our coach clock management missing the time out in a tie game that can cause us the game🤷

Yesterday's big win proves beyond ALL doubt that the Cowboys are THE best drafting team in the NFL for the past 10 years. The Cowboys put 5 rookies on the field and 4 of them were in the starting line-up. Can all the talking heads and about half the fan base stop crying about the Cowboys not being players in free agency? The Cowboys will give a massive deal to Parsons next year and they will continue to draft talented players.

If only the Cowboys had invested a high draft pick in the tight end position.
