The horse armor is provides new perks and stat boosts. You can get this from a new mythic tale : The Legacy of Kazumasa Sakai.

Ghost of Tsushima is a 2020 action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Featuring an open world, the player controls Jin Sakai, a samurai on a quest to protect Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan.

you can also have protection from enemies when they try to attack btw which means Jin can dodge arrows if I'm correct if you let the horse equip the armor
