While the Woman in Black franchise is a fictional story based on a gothic novel written in 1983, there is a real-life case that included a similar ghost. The case of the Cheltenham ghost became one of the first widespread stories of the paranormal and included some seriously chilling accounts from those who came in contact with the Woman in Black.

I have been familiar with this case since the 1980s, when I read about in a compilation of cases from the archives of the British Society for Psychical Research. I have always been impressed by Rosina Despard, who lived at Garden Reach with her family in the 1880s and tried on many occasions to "catch" the ghost. She was a very rational and fearless young woman who went on to become a doctor. Better than any fiction based on this fascinating haunting!
