This video is of a commissioned lace project, titled Judith Slaying Holofernes, which I made to open the exhibition Threads of Power at Bard Graduate Center in NYC in 2022. It is now in the collection of the Textilmuseum in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The portrait "Free Woman of Color" in the New Orleans Historical collection is a fascinating tie to the historical context of lace. She was originally painted wearing a lace collar, but it was painted over during "restoration" in the 80's because the restorer didn't believe the lace could be original. It is now uncovered and on display properly again. Your lovely collar reminded me of it.

My grandmother takes me to her friends house
They call themselves the "lace ladies" and there are about 10 of them
Me being 16 I'm the youngest one there and everyone works on lace
I'm still a beginner but I love lace, it's really therapeutic and a lost art I find truly amazing,
We have tea time 🫖 and some cookies 🍪 and set off to work on our newest project
It's so nice to have ladies who have had so much more experience there to help you, and the stories they share about there life is so inspiring ❤
I'm so happy I found your channel, and you have reminded me to start the next project I've been putting off😅😊❤

In a world where just about anything can be made by machines, it's so heartwarming to know that there are people out there still making stuff by hand, just because they can.

I am so glad I found your channel. Part of me wants to start a new hobby but … my husband might kill me because I sew, quilt, knit, crochet. I can’t imagine the people who might ask how much you sell your lace pieces for because when I tell them how much a quilt would cost they think I am nuts. At bare minimum $750 to $1000 for a custom bed quilt with my skill isn’t that much.

What blows me away is the expert filling in of the motifs. She needs no pattern, just the design to guide her. Beautiful artisinal level work.

I always wanted to learn this. My great aunt was a nun in Belgium, and would send lace to my grandma from time to time.

This kind of effort must be the origin the culture of accepting a gift with gratitude and no complaints. I couldn't imagine telling someone you didn't like their 200 hours of labor.

just beautiful. one of my great grandmother's made lace doilies and crosses for bookmarks, but she used needles. that women could knit or crochet anything. i have a blanket she made 30 years ago that is made of rectangles of different knitting patterns in all different colors. it's a beautiful thing that has been used thoroughly.

That is absolutely stunning! You make it look so easy, and I know it's far from easy to gain such skill and precision. Really beautiful and perfect music choice.

I'm not certain why YT offered up your channel about lace and historical textiles to my feed - but I am glad it did so! A lovely and fascinating art form I knew nothing about. Subscribed!
