- Didn't sleep a wink, did you?
- Hey.
- Robert, that girl, Alina...
- Why?
- I couldn't tell you why it mattered.
- Why what they did to her, that mattered to me so much.
- One day somebody, ...does something unspeakable to someone else to... someone you hardly knew, and you... do something about it because you can.
- Because it's who you are?
- Who you've always been?
- Sometimes we make the wrong choices to get to the right place.
- I know a part of you died when Vivian did.
- But not the part she loved the most.
- Go be him.
- Yep.
- Don't forget to say goodbye.
- Good bye.
- Everything all right?
- Were you able to help him?
- He didn't come for help.
- He came for permission.

"he didn't come here for help. He came for permission". That made my spine chill

I love how she leaves him of all people speechless. What a scene

It's so cool that you're stronger enough to let your Boss say:
He didn't come for help...he came for permission...!!!

My single favorite scene in an absolutely excellent film! Her insight to him is perfect and her advice was opening to his soul. Go be that person.

I believe that McCall is a good man who has done bad things and knows how to do those things, but hates being the kind of person he becomes when he does those things. He came to "ask" if he could do those bad things and wonders if doing so would make him the kind of person his deseased wife would hate. Susan tells him that his actions, no matter how bad they are, doesn't make him a bad person, because his reasons were why his deceased wife loved him in the first place. It is such a powerful scene.

He didn't come for help....
He came for permission.

Denzel is the ultimate movie bad ass in these films.

Reminds me of another Denzel Role: "Man on Fire" - Creasy's art is death, he's about to paint his masterpiece.
The delivery of these scenes are phenomenal.

At least he still believes in the chain of command

This was when McCall got unleashed.

Susan knew something about Vivian was holding him back.

Powerful scene.

She allowed the dead man to morph into a grim reaper.

"There's these creeps I want to fuck up beyond all recognition."
"Yeah, go do that."
"Sweet, bye."

This part of the scene is so powerful and useful in everyday life. So many comments about the movie, but not enough about the philosophy behind it, it is amazing! We forget apart of us that makes us who we are and why we have draw a line that we do not cross and principals why we stand up and fight. Now a days we lead lives to try and impress people we don't know or care about. And will seek out for permission or confirmation bias, sometimes we just forget. Great and underrated movie, Denzel is one of my favorite actors and reasonably a principled man in every one of his films and in life, I hope.

basically the concept of the movie is mystery, his character is a character who you don't know much backstory but you knew he is well respected! who he is is simple, what he is is very complicated

This scene is so underrated of how badass McCall is. Asking permission to kill a whole mob.

Robert went to Susan basically asking her for permission to take these men out and due to her photos of her with Presidents you knew she was someone of extreme importance and decision making within the CIA possibly a former director of the CIA or executive director of the CIA but you knew she is basically untouchable. So Robert has to technically go ask Susan for permission to continue down this path and when she said to Robert "dont forget to say goodbye" was her way of saying make sure you take Pushkin and Teddy out and tell them goodbye. It's more of a undisclosed chain of command in which he has to get approval first from Susan.

I would love to see a 'prequel' going back to when he was still working for the government. I think that would be interesting.
