using an airbrush for sketching doesn’t work for everyone - a colorful brush with low opacity is what me and many others use, and it is nice because you can vary the values

I don't need that brush, I just need to take off my glasses

I would actually recommend the round brush - hear me out OR any other brush that feels controllable. Takes some time to find but I like to use the PENCIL SHOCKING RIGHT 💀 (and for other times I use the rectangle opacity brush)

Huge tip as well - sketch in a color instead of just black, and use different colors for different passes/sections. Helps me a ton

I really like to draw on a piece of paper (as I’m better at traditional art but also love digital) and then upload it to a drawing app and trace over it.

I just think that it doesn't really matter what brush you use if your art looks good in the end. My methods of sketching and lineart change frequently depending on what I feel like using.

If you're someone who's starting out digital art and previously was drawing traditionally, I recommend using some type of texture brush so you can have a natural feel and become confident in your lines. Might work for some, might not work for others; but is worth trying this out :D

The purpose of a sketch is to give you a guideline for lineart. This method might be preferable to some people, but it makes sketching a less effective tool. I would recommend trying to use a reasonably small and hard brush for sketching. That way, you have to figure out all the weird anatomy stuff before you move on to lineart. This is going to make the lineart phase much less of a pain, and probably save you time in the end because it's harder to figure out anatomy while also trying to make the lines look good.

personally i like to use a sketch brush that’s the same size as my lineart brush, but whatever floats your boat

ppl talking abt how their method changes or differs but they don't understand that these are tips for those who struggles with their art. If you've found your way or perhaps want to try different methods to improve yours, then by all means proceed.

As an artist, everyone have their own ways and style at drawing things so these are just basic guidelines. You're supposed to use this as a starting ground and progress on your own from that point.

Heres a somewhat pro tip. You don't need an airbrush to do sketching. I swear on my life you can make a sketch just as quickly using literally any brush. ._. It depends on what feels comfortable for you. Now I am not neccesarily telling you no using the airbrush to sketch, feel free to. I'm saying it will probably contribute near nothing compared to other brush. Some real pro tips:

CLEAN UP YOUR FILTHY SKETCH. THANK ME LATER. (Clean up the lines so your sketch looks like your lineart later one. Also makes it easier to lineart because it is easier to understand.)

Lower the opacity of your sketch layer. No brainer but I'm including it anyway.

I drew this pfp. I know it looks like trash, it's because it's super uber duper old. I'm bad but not that bad it's okay.

Whatever brush you use, just remember that the sketching phase is where you make mistakes! Don't treat your sketches like lineart! Make a bunch of mistakes, fix them, clean the sketch up a bit if needed too. It's supposed to be loose! :)

That's actually quite useful. Thank you.

ive heard some advice that goes against this that was badically like:

"if u cant see the forms you sketched clearly the line art isnt going to look clean"

tho this only aplies if youre going for a specific artstyle? not sure, but its art so do what u wanna do, itll look great regardless

the best advice i can give as someone who loves paper and has been getting used to digital art, experiment with ALL the brushes you find interesting. pick one, try drawing with it and having a feel for it. if you like it, save it. if you can, make a collection of all the brushes you like. have fun with it and get familiar with them.

every brush helps with a different kind of drawing, and every person will have a different preference for each brush and what to use it for. Acrylic brush is great for digital painting, but i also like making it small and putting the opacity a little lower to use it as a sketching tool especially simce you can make it bigger to easily sculpt a silhouette or shadow.

once you're more used to what tools you have, it's easier to actually draw something with intention rather than blindly guessing what might be good.

The real life saver is stabilization. If y’all are having pixelated lines or the lines are kinda squiggly and not curved like you intended, then look up where your line stabilization is in your program. It’s incredible.

Always depends on what you want to achieve as well as just personal preference. For me airbrush is too undefined. I prefer a hard round with no brush dynamic. But that’s just me.
Also what’s your goal? Is it to learn the thing you are drawing or get better at brush control, muscle memory and linework. In the latter case it might even be beneficial to reduce brush size. I’ve been doing this for the last few months to get quicker and more precise with the first sketch.

I used a flat brush for sketching because it creates varying line weight, opacity and great for small and big areas
