Just to be clear, this song is a dialogue between a father and his son. The deeper voice is the father and the higher is the son. My favorite line is “From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen”. That’s the son talking.

The INCOMPARABLE Cat Stevens! Wrote this life revealing song of advice at a tender young age of What a musical treasure and a treasure to humanity...

I love how he plays both Father and Son, such a deep and emotional song.

When I was young, I understood the "Son"'s point of view. The world awaited and I was eager to explore. Now as a Woman of 60, I relate to the "Father" and understand the emotional advice given to his child. After all these years, this song is still touching and gets you in the feels

This seems to be one of Cat Steven’s most personal songs. He was a sexy rock star, and people loved him. Crushed on him madly! He was actually in the process of going away from his father’s world at the time he wrote this. He later left the music scene, became a Muslim, and changed his name to Yusuf. He did marry and have children, happily. Now he has returned to music, and he’s doing it his way. He’s a family man, an older man, a man of a different faith, one who perhaps worried about his acceptance back into the music world. He did not need to fear. His songs of peace and love are welcomed by old and new fans. Now, as you noted, he’s the old man in the song. Love this.

I was a sophomore in high school back in 1970 when the album "Tea for the Tillerman" came out and this song "Father and Son" became one of the greatest songs from that great album.
The song is a son's coming of age. Telling his father that... "He has to go away." And the father telling his son with the wisdom of his years. He is not yet ready to face the world at this time... "Take your time, think a lot, think of everything you got. Because you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not."-Cat Stevens
Can the wisdom of the years be enough to hold his son? Will stubbornness and hard headedness of his son keep him from staying? Is this youth gone awry? Or the parent becoming an empty nester? Many questions and many possibilities... Awesome!

My dad is a man of few words and details aside: we were car riding after a “long talk” before I went to college on our drive to the campus after concluding the talk he just played this from his iPod. Enough said love my Pop.

Cat Stevens was one of the greatest singer/songwriters and a Folk Rock legend of the early 70's. I was a 17-year-old junior in high school when this came out back in 1971. Today I am a 70-year-old😼😽🙀 senior citizen enjoying the music of my youth once again with this lovely reaction channel couple. The Father tries to tell his son. To take his time and think a lot and think about everything you got because you'll still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not. The Son Retorts: How can I try to explain when I do, he turns away again it's, always been the same, same old story. This has gone on between fathers and their sons forever. It's told hauntingly beautiful by Cat Steven. Brilliant!

" Tea for the Tillerman" is a classic album and deserves a listen. He has so much more!!! We wore this album out in the '70's.

When I was young, my impression of this song was all about the son. He wanted to live but not by his father's rules of life. Now that I'm older I can now see what the father was trying to convey.

My favorite Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf) song. A dialogue between Father and Son. The generation gap; applies to all generations. The young want to move on; the older folks want to keep them the same. (Obviously, not every person, but generally.) I saw him in concert in the early 70's. Just him on his acoustic guitar and a pianist. Amazing artist.

Glad you are doing some more Cat Stevens. Great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was his "Tea For The Tillerman". The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". His first big hits were "Matthew & Son", "I Love My Dog" & "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1967. He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.
