What is Writ?

Writs are a written order from the Supreme Court or High Court that commands constitutional remedies for Indian Citizens against the violation of their fundamental rights.

There are five types of writs

1. Habeas corpus- To release a person who has been detained unlawfully whether in prison or in private custody.

2. Quo warraranto- To secure the performance of public duties by lower court, tribunal or public authority.

3. Mandamus- To quash the order already passed by an inferior court, tribunal or quasi judicial authority.

4. Certiorari- To prohibit an inferior court from continuing the proceedings in a particular case where it has no jurisdiction to try.

5. Prohibition- To restrain a person from holding a public office which he is not entitled.
