i got sucked into woodpecker lore due to my family's last name. my ancestors were likely from Piceni, which is an ancient tribe that was said to have been led by a woodpecker during the sacred spring. Picus is a rustic god, even though he is considered to be the son of Saturn, he is associated with Mars. the myth is that he was transformed into a woodpecker from Circe, a woman he scorned.

So Mars is the God of martial victory by persistance rather than by overwhelming "godly force", is the vibe I get from this? He incarnates an idealized Roman Citizen as He would live in time of peace and prosperity. Would that be accurate?

Reference to Mars:
“The progress of the war was attended by many proceedings as much at variance with the laws of man as the laws of God. For the details we refer to other chapters of this work. The expedition of Fremont into California, in 1815 and 1816, was palpably unjustifiable, and its purpose but very thinly disguised. The absolution by General Kearney of the inhabitants of New Mexico and California, from their allegiance to Mexico, his compelling the native officers to take the oath of allegiance to the United States, * and the execution as traitors by other commanders of those who rose and attempted to destroy their invaders, and shake off their control, were deeds that find no justification in the recognized laws of nations, however sanctioned by the “bloody code of Mars” . Many other illegitimate barbarities of the war are recounted in chapter thirteen.”

-From the book, “The War with Mexico reviewed” by Abiel Livermore

This is very informative. I did watched a video of 'geese attacking people' here on YouTube because I was curious with what you said haha. As an astrological pagan, this was very helpful for me to understand Mars the god of war. Watching from Philippines :-)

The Romans Mars is in a way very much alike virgils Aeneas in nature. The contrast between Aeneas and Achilles according to Virgils interpertation of Homers Illiad is in some respects the same contrast between Romes Mars and Greeces Achilles

Both Aeneas and Achilles were warriors and demi-gods but Achilles was brave, talented but selfish, bad tempered, arrogant and argumentative...roughly the same characteristics of Ares

As for Aeneas, Virgil depicts him as self-sacrificing, honest, patient, persistent/faithful (fidelis) and brave but not as talented/capable as Achilles

Virgils Aeneas is in fact Mars, and Mars is Aeneas. Mars imregnates Aeneas's great grand daughter in alba longa (city founded by Aeneas) who gives birth to Romulus the founder of Rome

Mars was the only deity whos shrine was included in the King of romes house. His spear rattling was a signal that war was imminent. His field (Campus Martius) was where Roman conscripts and troops were trained, the month of spring was associated with both war and agriculture, spring marks the begining of military campaigns and agricultural works, both are efforts that require planning and luck, physical and mental aptitude

In the field of mars around spring sometimes there a fog. At a specific time there is a return of the three riders, the original Triaf. The fog around Campus Martius symbolizes the uncertainty of endeavours, three riders approach, the original triad which includes Mars and Jupiter, and they ride towards the Capitoline Hill via Campus Martius, they are extremely fatigued because of their long Journey which is symbolic of the intense efforts involved in agriculture and military training, agriculture which again like war has no gurantees of success, riddled with risks and requires a lot of perserverance, hard work, vigilance and luck

The uncertainties are numerous, variables outside of your control such as the weather, disease can ruin all your investments. Hence agriculture involves a lot of luck and is a gamble. Reverence to the Gods helps ensure luck is on their side, vows were kept strictly and people were careful to follow the Gods will and not to incur their anger

So Spring means a new begining, and Mars ushers in a new begining and a chance for reaping more through military expansion and agricultural harvests

So let spring come!!! Spring is the Phoenix rising from the ashes of the old that begins its fall in autumn and dies in winter.

Spring is rebirth and regeneration, spring is Mars virility

Mars is a true father to Rome, they are inseperable, as a Son is to his Father, they not only carry his Name they live by his way, they are men of the fields and also men of war
