CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Annelle (Daryl Hannah) tries to comfort M'Lynn (Sally Field) at Shelby's graveside by reminding her that Shelby has gone to a better place.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The title refers to those seemingly frail Southern belles who survive any and all deprivations through whims of iron. Robert Harling's original stage play was set exclusively in a Louisiana beauty parlor where an all-female cast of characters laughed, cried and compared menfolk. The film expands the playing field by including scenes at picnics, hospitals and the like, and by visually depicting the males who never appeared in the stage version. Dolly Parton plays the goodnatured beauty-shop owner, while Shirley MacLaine is the cantankerous town eccentric, decked out in grungy overalls and speaking fluent Trash. Well-to-do Sally Field bravely endures several assaults to her sensibilities, not the least of which is the illness (and subsequent death) of daughter Julia Roberts. The performances are first-rate, with the possible exception of Daryl Hannah's overemphatic portrayal of a gawky hairdresser. The film stumbles a bit in its depiction of the male characters as fools and deadheads, and in the final overlong hospital scenes involving the comatose Roberts, which play like a road company version of Terms of Endearment. Otherwise, Steel Magnolias is a prime example of ensemble filmmaking, lovingly coordinated by director Herbert Ross. (Sidebar: Herbert Ross was reportedly rather rough on Julia Roberts, deriding her lack of experience. The rest of the female cast rallied around Roberts and told the director to lay off or pay the price).

How on Earth Sally Field was robbed of an Oscar nomination for her impeccable performance in this timeless film is beyond me. Every nuance, utterance and facial expression aligned with how a resilient, grieving mother would react amid times of strife and cautious optimism.

Daryl Hannah has been criminally underrated as an actress. She is perfect in this film and deserved an Oscar nom too. 💙

I always thought that Daryl Hannah was my favorite in this movie. Whether her and/or I have high functioning autism, I loved Daryls acting so much as shy and soft spoken in a great way.

My Dad just passed away on Monday. People try to comfort you with these speeches but it doesn't ease the pain.

Geez. I don’t blame M’lynn for being annoyed at Annelle here. She was being irritating as hell even though she meant well.

It was Shelby's honest will and clear decision! Here mind and soul was so much greater than her physique. One of my favorite movie characters ever!

I am still in shock that this is still the same Daryl Hannah who played Splash and Kill Bill 1 and 2..

Have been looking for the "I was there when that beautiful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out" scene... this came close! That line reminds me so much of Ms. Debbie Reynolds and after her passing today after just losing Carrie yesterday... my heart is breaking....

We all have our own guardian angels to guide us. We know that Sally Fields is a very remarkable actress and this film is also one of her many triumphs alongside many of the other films she starred in, including Smoky and the Bandit. When Sally Fields, in character as M’Lynn mourns her daughter Shelby, it made me want to cry alongside her. I think it was her most powerful moment.

One of my favorite lines of the film, but it needs to include the next line:

Thank you, Annelle. I appreciate that. And it's a real good idea. Shelby, as you know, wouldn't want us to get mired down and wallow in this. We should handle it the best way we know how...and get on with it. That’s what my mind says. I wish somebody’d explain to my heart.

As someone who is the opposite of religious this was a very beautiful scene and a wonderful way to think of things.

As an adult watching this and having read the Bible I totally agree with annelle and understood where she was coming from.. It's actually very refreshing and beautiful how she said it

Yea! I agree with anelle. I think that when our loved ones pass away … they go to a place where they become a guardian angel. I know my pappy is watching over us or doing something in heaven

I tear up more at this than with M'Lynn's next scene
