What do you make of the new Shimano 105 Di2?

In other words, 105 is no longer the "peoples groupset".

I have to say, I'm impressed Si managed to keep a straight face when calling the 1800€ 105 "groupset of the people".

Yay 105 Di2, can't wait for claris Di2 to finally afford having a Di2

Will stay with my Campag Record 12 speed mechanical. Pure joy to use. I need something in my life that I don’t have to recharge; my bike is it.

105 Groupset of the people should be:
- Affordable (under 1k)
- 10/11/12 speed compatible
- disk and rim brake

Over pricing and under delivering. So much for appealing to the mass road cycling/amateur racing market.

As Simon correctly pointed out, the main reason to avoid Di2 electronic shifting is cost.
This video proves that nicely.
Di2 is still adding around £1, 000 to a bike and those carbon wheels add nearly another £1, 000.
Ridiculous to describe this as a people's bike

£1730 hardly a bargain anymore. Should of just used a few generations ago's ultegra and re badged it. Saved all the tooling and testing costs.

"A slight premium" could mean twice the price for a mid-range bike.

I’ve definitely noticed a restructuring in the past 4/5 years in the cycling industry in regards to how they organise the hierarchy relative to price.

A bike with Dura Ace Di2 used to come on bikes under £4000; Ultegra Di2 could be had on bikes under £2000. Both perfectly possible just a few years ago. Not now though: Dura Ace Di2 is reserved to justify the £10, 000 bike boom, and Ultegra Di2 is seen on £8000 bikes. This, despite Di2 now being cheaper to manufacture and the fact Shimano must have long since recouped all the R&D costs over the course of previous iterations. There is no excuse whatsoever for the entirely arbitrary price hikes.

At my local club there are guys, on low wage incomes, riding around on 10k bikes that they’ll never average a ride over 18mph on. Which is to say that the industry’s unscrupulous marketing and clever confirmation bias science is very potent stuff indeed. The industry has waged war against consumers and won. Push bikes are now priced in line with motorbikes. “Hello Sir, how can I help you….”would that be the Ducati Panigale or the Specialized S-Works you’d like for your £16, 500?”….

It’s that ridiculous. The markups are an affront to the cycling community. Their practices are up there with Pfizer’s unethical hoodwinkery. £20k bikes will be next, you watch…

I have been waiting for this for the last couple of years. I can't believe how disappointed I am at how expensive it is. I can buy the Ultegra Di2 for virtually the same price.

Grateful for my ‘22 Allez with mechanical 11-speed 105’s. Love live R7000!!

“The average 105 cyclist won’t be interested in speed or mechanics” nah I just don’t want to pay an extra £300 for 300g

I think that they forgot the label "groupset ot the people", almost double the price of the previous generation, and don't forget the ability to swap derailleurs with others brands.... the key factor is price, it's always been price. Now this open an oportunity to look some smaller (and chinese) brands...

Glad you mention connecting to headunits Si. You replied in YouTube comments about Shimano’s dick move to withdraw support for Hammerhead yet I’ve never seen it mentioned on GCN show or tech show. Hammerhead have paid for ad’s too with GCN why isn’t it mentioned?

pantster

About that "headunit support", it applies to everything except Hammerhead - in an move, Shimano explicitly asked them to remove the feature because Hammerhead is owned by SRAM now.

So I've read Cycling Tips article on the release of 105 Di2 and watched the Bike Radar and GCN videos as well.
First of all, I like how Shimano has presumably put everyone that runs 105 into a group that 1. Does Not race. 2. Doesn't do mechanical tinkering/maintenance. 3. Never had a bike before.
The second issue is the fact that 105 was supposedly the affordable option. For around $1800 (US) that has been circulating around; you could have a Campagnolo Chorus, which is substantially lighter and much more customizable in terms of features. Again, the price of an entry level groupset from Shimano is now higher than a mid to high level Campagnolo groupset. Let that sink in!!
At the same time, 105 doesn't offer the variety that it's suppose to offer. By grouping everyone who runs a 105 to a non-racer, mechanically inept, not bothered with weight, and generally clueless cyclist, Shimano has effectively boxed them into a corner. You want more options, pay for Ultegra; otherwise. shut up and ride this.
It used to be that you would get options in this marketplace. With this new 105 you have exactly two options, get the 11-34 or 11-36 and no you can't have 11-28. Since, they don't race; they won't mind 400g to 700g weight penalty either (comparing to the Chorus). Then they think hey, may be we should have a 52-36 for those people who definitely don't race.
All in all, this is a disappointment all around!
Expensive, not enough variety in gearing options, no mechanical option, no rim brake option, and missing many of the features of Ultegra but Di2.

$1800 US and available in 2030 being optimistic here!

This is excellent news, but my word, it's still so expensive!

I wish they’d spent the time catching up making the parts I need for the bike I already own tbh. I cant just be me that fears wearing out a cassette or even a brake rotor at the moment?!
