What if Canada became an American state?

Do you think that this is a good idea?

I kinda view Canada as a Commonwealth of the US. They are protected from invasion by the most powerful military in world history, have a powerful trading partner right at their doorstep, allowing more of their otherwise military spending to go towards other domestic spending, somewhere to export their goods to without massive transportation costs, access to sunny beaches via a long flight or drive, and since most live near the border, access to cheaper groceries and goods (confirmed by a Canadian friend of mine). If Canada ever did join the US, it would probably do so as a territory. Both situations are never going to happen, but the territory option is more probable than the state option. However, let's entertain the idea of statehood. Quebec would never join the US willingly, so Canada would not join the US in whole (obviously we could invade Quebec, but I'm going with the peaceful option). New Brunswick would most likely stay united with Quebec, so the US would get most of Canada, not all of it. Before Canada officially joined the US, these two places would become the "new Canada, " while every other province/territory would be ceded to the US. Since the US doesn't allow secession--hence, the Civil War--this would be done beforehand. The US would allow this to avoid trouble in the future in those areas. No one wants to deal with angry Canadians. So Canada would never actually disappear (well, kinda), but it would become a lot smaller and lose valuable forests, farmland, minerals, oil, ports, and cities. Not to mention a loss in population/workforce. Now about that "kinda" from earlier... It's name would probably be changed to whatever Quebec chooses, along with its flag. New Brunswick would just go with these decisions. After territory and some cosmetic things are cleared up, economics and government spending would come up. The US would probably allow Canada to use the port of Vancouver (Canada's largest port). Maybe a joint authority plan would be put in place. Or perhaps part of the port becomes an exclave of the new Canada. All of the trade agreements with what was Canada and the US will be upheld with some quick modifications for now, and renegotiated later. Trade with other countries depends on who approves of this new US state and who does not. Obviously Russia and China would stop all trade with the new Canada, which will hurt. But not so much the new Canada because they don't have much to trade anymore. This would force the new government to try and expand manufacturing, forestry, and mining so they have more to trade which means more money. Speaking of money... The new Canada would cease universal healthcare do to its massive cost, and move to a more selective universal healthcare system. Doctor visits, casts for broken bones, medications for simple illnesses, and so on would remain 'free, ' but larger procedures and more expensive medications would be paid for by the patient and insurance. Further, taxes would be increased on the populace, making medical expenses much more of a burden, causing more Canadians to choose US hospitals over theirs for expensive procedures since healthcare is better in the US--not cheaper, better. The new Canada does have a saving grace: immigration. Loads of Canadians will be moving from what is now the US to the new, and massively smaller, Canada. This would cause housing prices to rocket into the next galaxy. A building boom would occur, and the new Canada would be a great place to invest in due to all the new, and expanded, businesses and real estate market. Homelessness and poverty will be a big problem along side this though. But Canadians are well educated and can find a good job, so this wouldn't be a permanent problem by any means. I could speak about the rest of Canada as part of the US, but I'll let another person speak to this side of the Canadian statehood conversation. Thank you for reading, and God bless.

Canada has 10 Provinces. I think if Canada joined the US, the United States would now have 60 States.
