Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally discuss Quran 2:214, which says: “Or did you expect that you would enter Paradise without being tested like those before you? They were stricken with adversity and hardship, and they were shaken until the messenger and the believers with him cried: when will Allah’s help come? Yes, indeed. Allah’s help is near.”
An example that helps to explain this verse is the tests at various levels of our schooling. The tests vary with the level of difficulty and the level of study. One would not expect that we are going to have the same tests in university as in elementary school. Similarly, people with various levels of closeness to God will be tested accordingly. The Prophets and Messengers of God (peace be upon them all), are at the highest levels of intimacy with God, and tested according to their closeness. Their test is very severe. We should take their patience as an example and know that God’s help is near in times of difficulty.

I'm also reminded of the book of Job... Especially Job 23:8 through 23:17.

It's not just that God is testing them... It's personal. God knows exactly what horrible things will transpire. Indeed, his help might not even be in this life at all.

This verse (2:214) is the most inspiring to me so far from the Quran. I am 9 chapters in.

Allah also helps believers through a third force [among the pegans] in a bipolar world as per Quran (Sultan bin Translation): Quran Chapter 18 verses 83-99:

They ask you [O Prophet] about Ⱬul-Qarnain. Say, “I will relate to you something of his narrative.” Surely We assigned for him a mundane task, and gave him all the things and means [to accomplish that].

So [to get the resources and means] he pursued a way,
until he reached the setting time of the sun, he found the sunsetting to be taking place in a spring of murky water and he found near him a community [named Gog].
We said, “O Ⱬul-Qarnain! Either punish them or treat them kindly [whatever you deem appropriate].”
He responded, “The one [among Gog] who wrongs we will soon punish him [with enslavement], then [one day] he will be returned to his Lord and He will punish him with a horrible torment.

But for the one [among Gog] who believes and does good, he will receive good [safety from me], and we will assign him easy commands.”

Then he followed another path [to get further resources and means]
until he reached the rising time of the sun. He found the sunrise rising over a community (named Magog) for whom We had provided no refuge from him [Zul-Qarnanin].
So it was [the same that he did with Gog, enslaving the wrongdoers, and rewarding the doers of good]. And We truly had full knowledge of him [about whom he were to enslave or set free from Gog and Magog].

Then [after having all his resources from his past two ways] he followed a path
until he reached a pass between two mountains, where he found a community who could hardly understand a word he was saying [that Allah send him to secure them from Gog and Magog].
They said, "O Zul-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog are corrupting this land. Can we pay you to erect a barrier between us and them [as you have with you a lot of slaves]?

He responded, “What my Lord has provided for me is far better [inspiration]. But assist me with resources [like iron, copper], and I will build a barrier between you and them.
Bring me blocks of iron!” Then, when he had filled up ˹the gap˺ between the two mountains, he ordered [his slaves from Gog and Magog], “Blow [the fire]!” When the iron became red hot, he ordered [his slaves from Gog and Magog], “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.”
So none were able to scale the barrier, nor were able to penetrate it.

He said, "This is a mercy from my Lord [that I was given this task and I did it]; but when the promise of my Lord comes [about end of my reign], He will level it to dust. The promise of my Lord is surely true."

And We will leave on that day [the end day of Zul-Quarnain reign] onwards some of them [who escaped his enslavement from Gog and Magog] would be competing over others [in corrupting the land, air, sea, and space], [causing] the Horn to be blown [earlier] and then We would assemble them in [one] assembly.
