Relive one of the most eclectic shows of Le Guess Who? 2018: the performance of sitar player Anoushka Shankar and Austrian percussionist & Björk collaborator Manu Delago, together with the 27-member string section of the Metropole Orkest, conducted by Jules Buckley.

Continuing the legacy of her father, the legendary Ravi Shankar, Anoushka is considered to be one of the world’s most renowned sitar players. Her music reflects her Indian background as well as her life in London and California, blending classic Indian sounds with contemporary influences.

I was fortunate to have a friend and his wife to introduce me Anoushka Shankar many years ago by taking me to one of her live concerts in Chicago, yes to carrying on with her father's legacy 💙 ❤️ 🎉

I am 57, and grew up listening to Ravi Shankar. I love the sitar and Indian culture, I am relaxing with some ganga, with this playing, Anoushka is brilliant. Absolutely exquisite music. :)

Indian sitar is so incredibly beautiful. My father played Ravi Shankar's albums in the 1970s. I was a toddler at the time. That's where my love for this instrument started. I started playing guitar when I was 13. When I was 21 I bought an Indian sitar. I still have this one but unfortunately I have never been able to find someone who really teaches me to play on it. I've listened to this whole 5 times and it just keeps getting better. Fantastic !!!

Indian music and sitar in particular is so different. It's like its trying to tell you a little story as the notes flow ...

I adore like many here both Anoushka and Ravi Shankar. Indeed if it werent' for Ravi and George Harrison (Beatles), the West may never have appreciated Indian music. What Ms. Shankar does with her many musical collaborations is unique and continues her father's work. But for having listened to a lot of Indian music lately (confinement effect), I became aware that we have in the West a way to see the trees (the Shankar père et fille), rather than the forest of so many Indian virtuosi. Sitar is not the only amazing Indian instrument (Hariprasad Chaurasia on bansuri is another star, Nikhil Banerjee (sitar), Ustad Amjad Khan (sarod), Ustad Bismillah Khan on shehnai, Shujaat Khan (sitar and vocals), Surbahar Maestro Ustad Irshad Khan, and so many others for each decade since recordings exist. Again, nothing negative here about Anoushka (how could I??) and her involvement with so many music project, but just a reminder that Indian music is an endless field of amazing composers/musicians. Interestingly the YT algorithm here concentrates on Ravi and Anoushka. However, as soon as you enter one of the names I mention here, the selection goes very deep.

Ravi shankar's drummer once stayed at the home i was renting out during college.

My landlord's family was the universities orcheastra, quite literally their family owned it.

They asked me if I wanted to eat dinner with him and I said nah im good.

`12 years later it is my biggest regret because of how appreciative I am of ravi's and his friends, and how much I enjoy their music.

I wish I couldve given him a hug and said thank you

Fifty-something years ago I traded my hollow body electric bass guitar for a sitar. It had all the sympathetic strings and double gourd. I had a wonderful time attempting to play some riffs and I could entertain myself for hours. Over time, the maintenance of all the strings and frets overwhelmed my ability to keep it in tune and playable. None the less, it was a wonderful time in my life!

Anoushka is a modern-day Goddess—I don't mean just in terms of her beauty (which is obvious) but spiritually and energetically. She is one-of-a-kind and her proficiency in sitar is truly astounding. This woman's spirit is powerful.

This is so good.
The sitar doesn't seem to overpower the orchestra and the orchestra doesn't overpower the sitar.
They seem to blend perfectly to create a beautiful, emotional piece.

Thank you for uploading

Notes of Raaga Kirwani (opening 12-min piece) are the main reason we feel mesmerised. Their interpretation and presentation here are, of course, flawlessly harmonious.
So many well-tuned violins etc following, supporting, blending with what the sitar 'sings' creates exhilarating melody.
Reminds us of pioneering collaboration among Yehudi Menuhin/Zubin Mehta & Pandit Ravi Shankar.
Thank you for adding joy to life.
May all of you continue to make great music for decades.

Its as if the music is flowing through her body which then ultimately transcends into the atmosphere and passes through anyone's soul who is able to hear... Absolutely stunning!
