FFXIV Crafting 101 - Introduction to crafting

Final Fantasy XIV has a very unique crafting system that can be a little hard to get started on. What is CP, how do I get HQ? This is a intro to why you might level it, how to level it, and how the actual crafting itself works.

Thank you and I love that your talking soft and not too high pitched or low pitched...I usually close it out if go to the next speaker if they don't know how to speak into the mic properly lol You gave a good all around tutorial, not all of it sunk in because I'm brand new to the game but I'm saving this and will come back to it several times as I grasp the concept behind it all.

This information is still quite vague and yes their is craft classes you should do in order. The first being LTW since at 15 you get waste not, the single most important skill to get as a crafter period. Followed shortly by CUL for hastely touch, which brings crafting on its own to whole new levels. An finally ALC to 15 for Waste not, this will save your ass quite often with the 20 CP boost from good condition. Once you get these 3 to 15 get the rest to 15 in the order of your own choosing for an achievement. If you intend to go into advanced crafting, you will need at least the following lvl 50 Cross Class Skills:
(1) Careful Synthesis II from lvl 50 WVR
(2) Byregot's Blessing from lvl 50 CRP
(3) Ingenuity II from lvl 50 BSM
(4) Innovation from lvl 50 GSM
(and hopefully Steady Hand II from lvl 37 CUL too!)
The remaining lvl 50 Cross Class Skills are also very important, but at least with the above 4 skills, you will be able to construct a basic "Byregot rotation"

BSM and WVR are extremely important to level to 50 first since they make your crafting gear. Followed by CUL to 37 for steady hand 2.

As for food if your starting out I recommend.
Salt Cod - 15 gil for 4 extra control, plus faster leveling! Why not?
Stone Soup - 37 gil for 17 extra CP, plus faster leveling! This maybe a better choice over Salt Cod if you know how to utilize your CP.
I prefer Stone soup.
Also your retainers should support your crafting, have 1 support your gathering, either BTN for WVR or MIN for BSM/ASM. The other Retainer should be whatever your main class is so you can later have that Retainer collect/hunt creatures to make gathering mats much faster.
For those you can afford it, its ideal to have 4 retainers, 1 your main class, 2 your BTN, 3 your Miner, 4 support your main craft. so for most people who can afford it, that would most likely be 2 miners, a hunter(main class DOW/M) a botanist.

Oh 1 last thing, for retainers, your ITEM LEVEL is what matters if they are a Hunter the better the IT the better the rares they bring you. For the Gathering types they need GATHER stat high as possible :)
An finally, Many people don't know, you can actually buy extra unique untradable mainhand gathering/crafting tools (blue background tools, obtained from guild masters by completing lvl 50 class quests) from the Calamity Salvager. This will save you alot of effort at 50.

Because many people feel overwhelmed by how different crafting is in FF14, I actually find it better to focus on level 15, just to get their foot in the door.

I tend to recommend WVR first because of how many people feel about the RNG. Careful Synth might be outclassed later, but early on it is a godsend.
I tend to recommend CUL as the second, because CP is really short starting out and free Quality attempts are nice. For that same "CP is in short supply" reason, I recommend ALC as the third class to 15.

I also recommend a few classes for those interested in making their own gear. Mostly WVR, (progress/control gear) and GSM (CP accessories). WVR lines up with grabbing a useful cross-class skill, and jewelry is often not sold by NPCs.

Is this video still relevant in view of the most recent changes?

Nice vid. FYI, 14:14 Everquest 2 was very similar with the quality/durability mini-game and using skills to counter fluxes.

Btw another tip for beginners. Buy the exp food. You can just get Frumenty from a vendor for like 6 gil (or make your own) if you just want a basic simple one that gives extra CP for the extra exp.. There are of course better ones as you get higher in Cul as well.

As I commented in another video: Being such a Crafting System addict in MMORPGs, I felt a little disappointed in FFXIV. Sure, the puzzle mechanics are AMAZING and I love it more than any other Crafting system I ever played! But, it's sad to hear people saying "it's better for you trying crafting classes only after achieving Lv. 40/50 with your combat class, it's not worthy leveling early than that". Also, when you get Crafting in early levels to make gear for your own combat classes (Lv.10 onwards), you feel you don't need it, because all the gear found in Dungeons are far superior. Because of this, the gear you produce in the early crafting levels inevitably go to trash, I don't feel anyone could ever buy them (even HQ ones), so you "don't need" to invest that much time and gil (and this is why people say you don't need it early).

Should I wait till I'm lol 50 and done with MSQ, to start crafting?

So much good information. Thanks for putting this together!

Quick question though: If I change the FC's Active Action while it change it for everyone in the FC and put it on cooldown?

Oh and tip for beginner's you can pay for extra retainers by a monthly fee. I think it's #3 a month per extra retainer but I could be wrong. You start out with 2. I don't personally have extra ones yet so not positive on that price.

My first class was Thaumaturge. In the Thm storyline, Cocobusi becomes an alchemist to help him become a better Thaumaturge. I thought alchemist would compliment Thm, it didn’t really, but I was fortunate in that I think alchemist is the best crafter class to begin with.

First, the cross class abilities are essential and they are among the most useful of any crafter. Second, every class uses potions, and most potions are crafted 3 at a time. Crafting 30 HQ metal ingots would take forever, whereas crafting 30 HQ Ethers or Potions takes no time at all.

I began as a PS3 player when ARR first came out and it was very beneficial to be able to make 15-25k gil every day from level 15-20 alc items.

There doesn’t seem to be as many players as back in the day and most don’t buy level 15 potions anymore, but it allowed me to alwaya have some coin in the beginning. I still believe alchemist and culinarian are two of the best crafters to start out with.

I know I'm a year late but I'm hoping this will get seen.. is there a chance for a video on rotations and proper use of of the cross class abilities. I've almost got every crafting class to 15 and wondering if there is a better way get a boost to my leveling by utilizing a proper rotation.

i found your audio very low. but i enjoyed the guide.
i would add maybe a basic rotation in? and maybe say CUL / WRV / CRP are propb the best ones to level first for the cross skills

exactly the video i was looking for. im trying to earn gil for a house (hopefully) and was told to google crafting. I have dabbled a little in crafting (goldsmith) and gathering (fishing, mining). Though right now, id like to just focus on making gil and not making items for myself. Im still a bit confused as to what road to go for supplying leves material but i'll look into that. thanks for the content
