Ecosia offers RWE €1,000,000 for Hambach Forest

Ecosia's COO Wolfgang has an exciting announcement!

We are offering RWE 1 million Euros to buy the remaining stretch of the Hambach Forest from them. We are hoping to save this unique ecosystem from being forever lost to the public and future generations.

You might have heard of the Hambach Forest by now. It’s a 12,000 year old piece of woodland that once used to measure more than 13,500 acres. Since the German energy provider RWE started cutting it down in 1978 to mine for coal, only 10% of the original forest cover are left.

In comparison to the original sum RWE once paid to buy the forest, this is a fair price. Considering the revenue RWE is expecting to make by turning the coal underneath the forest into energy, our offer might not be high enough. However, it is what we are able to pay at this point. We are hereby asking other companies and organisations to join us and help us increase the offer.

We have to save the Hambach Forest as a unique ecosystem, as a symbol for our fight against climate change, and as a piece of precious woodland that should be accessible to everyone.

Unfortunately RWE has formally declined Ecosia's €1M offer. At this stage, the energy firm seems confident that the court will allow them to cut down the remaining part of the Hambach Forest. They are now in negotiations with them regarding a second offer. Let’s continue to build momentum to save the 12, 000-year-old forest!

Ich habe Ecosia noch nicht lange aber mein Counter sagt jetzt schon 293. Ich werde mit meinem Schulleiter sprechen und ihm Ecosia als Standard Suchmaschine empfehlen. Man muss sich ja nicht wirklich auskennen um sowas zu installieren.

This forest is that much more special because it is home to a unique species of bat which made only that particular forest as their breeding and nesting site. The RWE wants to cut down the whole forest and 'rehouse' these sensitive creatures like trash to another patch of vegetation in which such a unique species could never survive, all for the sake of profit. I really hope Ecosia pulls through with this one. Go Ecosia you are amazing !!!

I have an alternative solution: Ecosia or someone else, find a business tycoon, who is willing to buy the forest for 1000, 000 Euros or more, so it can be a nature reserve. And Ecosia use the 1000, 000 Euros to buy Borneo palm oil land, of 13, 500 acres(area of original woodland) and replant it with rainforest. Agreed?

Je tiens a vous feliciter car vous réparer les dégats humains et ça c'est dure a faire car moi je pense sur ~8 milliard d'humains il y en a trés peut qui ne se dise pas que la Terre c'est comme une maison, on y vit mais on doit l'entretenir . Les gens préféres la laisser avec tout leurs déchets et ne rien faire. Mais sans Terre on ne peut plus vivre. Certe vous serez mort quand la Terre serra "morte" mais nous devons donner une belle terre au générations futures !

For the next new tree planting project why not replant the jungles of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia that got sprayed with Agent Orange during the Vietnam War?

Ecosia, your website states it cost 0.2 Euros to plant a tree. 1000, 000 Euro's would have paid for 5, 000, 000 more tropical trees. That would have helped us reached the 1 billion target quicker, if you had spent the money on tropical trees. Borneo needs more badly.

What about the Millennium Seed Bank, Frozen Ark, and similar organizations that preserve the DNA, seeds and other material of organisms in case they become extinct and to preserve genetic diversity? That may be a way you can help in cases where there is deforestation going on and efforts to stop it did not succeed. That way, when they are done with what they wanted to do with the land, efforts can be made to restore it....
