If you have the u bolt wouldn't you just measure it ?

I did alot of granite countertop work and most faucets in bathrooms have a 4" on center U shape. Took quite a bit of explaining to get through the new guys heads that its kinda like using a radius to create a circle just doing it in a straight line. Some guys pick it up quick tho, usually the ones who have a knack for math that pick up on this stuff intuitively.

I tend to not listen to what someone else has measured for this exact reason. Always measures for yourself because chances are, you might think differently than whoever labeled it.

Isn't the U-bolt measurement the area inside the bolt, like 3" from leg to leg so its off on center by the diameter of the bolt, (half the diameter per leg)

Measure the hardware. Too many “nominal measurements” out here from 1” IPS being different from 1”CTS being different from 1 actual inch, plywood never being it’s advertised thickness, don’t even get me started on what a 2x4 actually is…

I officially learned that a 3” U-bolt is not 3” and nothing else🤷‍♂️

That’s because you measured it wrong. It is a 3 inch u bolt. The space in between is 3 inches. You don’t measure from center bolt to center bolt. You measure the inside space.
