Welcome to my channel How to Knot and in this video, I will be showing you how to tie a sheepshank. The sheepshank is used in applications such as camping and sailing. It is a quick and simple way of shortening or removing slack in a rope, will hold under tension and does not jam. Once that tension is released, the knot will fall apart which can be a disadvantage. It can even be used to shorten rope which is damaged, however the damaged portion of the rope must be passed through the half hitches.

Start by creating three identical loops.

Overlap the loops.

Then pull the center loops through the outer loops.

Tighten.

The easiest way is make an S pattern, half hitch x2 for both ends of rope, and pull both ends. Its much more easier to untie.

I don't like this way because it is hard to measure how long the rope will be after you're done, which is usually the point. I think you're better off starting off with two bights then making two hitches.

A better option for this purpose is the butterfly loop. It's more secure and has the added benefit of being a very secure loop (multi-purpose).
