Chiaroscuro: Light and Shadow in Architecture

Показать описание
Chiaroscuro is the Italian word for the design of light and shadow across the surface of a work of art. Chiaro means light, while scuro means dark. In painting this is straightforward design, but in architecture light and shadow are created by the massing of objects in sunlight. This requires an understanding of art, design, sunlight, optics, perspective, and the interplay of climate conditions during the day and over the course of a year.

I remember Fernando Caruncho being the first one that brought me into the light with the technique of combining architecture & landscape design using the methodist light & shadow technique in a minimalistic manner.

Light in shadow in modern architecture immediately makes me think of Louis Kahn the way he uses light to describe and formulate spaces is immaculate…. There is is a boo by Urs Bütiker called light and space he analysis the manifold light situations Kahn created during his career

I had to buy Ching when I was in Architecture, too. Oh, well! I eventually switched to the New York School of Interior Design where they had frequent gallery displays of renderings. There were some very beautiful ones that I saw, leaving Tracey Ching in the dust.
