Holy smokes, my dog has this and I can only imagine how hard you were squeezing to get them out. Here's me using a gentle rolling action to release the seal then remove with tweezers. I enjoy doing it and the dog enjoys it too

The dog could be sedated for things and then they found popping gold on him. The dog could be super comfortable and have no discomfort. We don't know just from watching. It isn't flinching or crying though.
