Die Schwyzer Gemeinde Rothenthurm (923 m ü. M.) liegt im Voralpengebiet in einem Hochtal der Biber. Auf Höhe von Biberegg verläuft die Wasserscheide, südlich fliesst die Steiner Aa nach Steinen in den Lauerzersee und nördlich die Biber Richtung Sihltal. Rothenturms Wahrzeichen ist der Letziturm, erbaut 1323 vor dem Morgartenkrieg, sein rotes Dach gab dem Ort den Namen.

Das Hochmoor von Rothenthurm war in den 1980er Jahren ein Politikum, als die Schweizer Armee hier einen Waffenplatz errichten wollte. Eine Volksinitiative stoppte das Vorhaben, das Gebiet ist seither geschützt als Hochmoor von nationaler Bedeutung.


The Schwyz municipality of Rothenthurm (923 m above sea level) is situated in the Alpine foothills region in a high valley of the river Biber. In Biberegg is the watershed, in the south the Steiner Aa flows towards Steinen into Lake Lauerz and in the north the Biberä in Biberbrugg flows into the Alp towards the Sihltal valley. The (red) Letziturm tower, which was built in 1323, gave the town its name and is the landmark of Rothenthurm.

The high moor of Rothenthurm became famous within Switzerland when the Swiss Armed Forces wanted to establish a military training area here in the 1980ies. This project was stopped by a popular initiative and the area has been protected ever since as a high moor of national importance.
