Good question. It may be a wash. The 808 sensor is FSI, the 920 is BSI. That makes a HUGE difference for low-light performance and noise reduction.

I have been on a studio photography course and I can tell you a camera can easily beat naked eye. All professional cameras today have this basic function called shutter speed adjustment, which enables photos to be taken in almost complete darkness or direct hard light.
No LED is needed.

Lumia 920 took the picture without flash, the flash was used only for autofocus. Watch the video carefully, you will see that the flower vase is completely white when the light was used for autofocus, then in the picture taken you can see that the flower vase has shadows, it's not completely white. So it's clear that the picture was taken without flash. If it would have been taken with flash, the flower vase would have been completely bright white, without shadows.

The trick is that Nokia is set to use extra long exposure (rather than being extra sensitive camera). This works when the user has a tripod (in this case look how he uses window as a support for his hand) and when the subject is not moving. You can see how long the shoot actually takes after the focus is ready. Useful feature but not so often you have a tripod and non moving subject.

its showing the quality of the sensor it just means in low light you are getting a better quality picture, so in terms it will give you better pictures full stop than any other camera phone.

It's because the other phones don't use flash for autofocus, they try to focus in the dark, while Lumia is smarter, uses flash only for focus, then takes the picture without flash. The image is brighter in lumia because it has a bigger sensor and special floating lenses that allow it to take in 5-10 times more light than competing smartphones without using flash, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night.

I don't think people understand that the camera sensor is one of the most crucial parts of a digital camera. That better the sensor the better it preforms in low light situations. Up until now there hasn't been a phone company that cared enough to invest its research in this area of design. As a photographer I'm glad to see that I will soon be able to carry a decent camera around with me everywhere for capturing those candid moments. My 5D gets pretty heavy XD

I am really liking the advanced features and the style, the beautiful looks and the freshness of new nokia and htc phones.

In other words, this is flash assisted focus. The flash allows the sensor to take a grasp of the light better and focuses way better.

Good lord people, let me spell it out for you.

Photography 101:
long exposure shot: keeping the shutter open for a longer amount of time than normal to allow more light to come in contact with the sensor, allowing for a "better lit" photo than what you can see.

auto focus assist:
turn on flash -> focus the lens -> turn flash off -> perform long exposure shot.

The OIS in the 920 allows the phone to have a longer exposure time without adding blur, something NO OTHER PHONE on the market can do.

the difference is when auto focus assist light activates, the camera lens absorbs the light, so when it takes the picture(assist light is off at this point) the lens in a way have memory of the light and is able to take a picture as if light was there (previously). Flash is used when the shutter captures the picture the flash (light) is on throughout the duraction of the capture

Well, he basically shoots photons into that black box two times via the assist light. Now, these photons have to go somewhere after they've been put into it. So when he finally takes the picture all those photons get reflected right back to his Lumia effectively lightening up the picture significantly. Energy in = energy out.

There is advantage and disadvantage:

Lamp AF:
Advantage:
- can throw farther the light. Thus, the subject can be farther.

Disadvantage:
- can startle the subject. No candid shots in dark scenes.

For infrared AF:
- just reverse the above.

Even though Nokia was caught cheating with their ads, they weren't lying: the camera for the 920 is absolutely wonderful. I'm hoping the price won't be too high because this phone is almost close to perfection. Definitely getting it though, no matter what the price will be.

Kudos Nokia, welcome back.

iPhone was way ahead of other smartphones in the beginning but in the iPhone 4 and 4s era, Android phones matched and even surpassed it in features such as speed, display size and OS features. iPhone 5 brought much less new things than what I expected. Design has been improved but Lumia 920 is much beautiful looking with 35% extra pixels, optical image stabilization, NFC and more. I think people should compare iPhone 5 to Lumia 820.

Also I think that in the end of the day (despite all the windows/Microsoft haters) it was the right call for Nokia to go for Windows OS...I mean sure Nokia's phones are not the only windows phones out there, but tight co-operation with Microsoft makes them as number-1 Windows Phone on the market and with the interface of Microsoft combined with Nokia's own services like City Lens, I think it really does offer something different compared to iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, now lets see how it succeeds

You man are smarter than 98% of the consumers and apperently the saying that he is using the flash in this video LOL. Take it or leave it this phone is AWESOME and they are doing it right whereas other OEM don't use flash to focus and you get crap pictures. Im saving up for this buster, just lost my phone so got to months to save for a new one hehe

It's the auto assist focus flash, the same is on sony xperia series. Also, the ISO on the Nokia is higher than the other phones, it can take photos in such darkness, despite the noise on the photos.

Didn't hear what the guy said? He said the flash was used for focusing, but if you look closely, the flash wasn't used when the photo was taken. Only during the focusing.

To those who weren't able to hear. He said that wasn't flash, it was an autofocus assist light.
