What most people do not realize is that Semi Trucks average around 5.8 miles per gallon. Every time the price of diesel fuel rises, their cost per mile rises. For example: When diesel was $3 per gallon they were averageing 51.7 cents per mile in just fuel costs, but when diesel costs $5.22 per gallon, now that cost is 90 cents per mile. Almost double. And they still have maintenance costs, truck payments, insurance, permits, and driver salaries to average per mile also that do not go down as the price of fuel goes up.
