Greatest slugger who ever lived. He was born in 1895, played 100 years ago and we still talk about him.

he died too young, 53. a whole generation or more missed out on seeing the babe in real life. he should have been around when roger maris broke his record in 1961, he would have been 66. and he would have been 78 when hank aaron broke the hallowed 714. the babe would have marveled at how much his legend grew. and the stories he could have told.

The classic picture of Babe looking out at the great facade of Yankee Stadium truly shows what he had built.

Despite the commentary, Ruth was not wearing one of his old uniforms. The Yankees didn't have the interlocking N and Y on their uniforms from 1917-36, and he played for them from 1920-35.

Several other Yankees wore number 3 until it was retired. Cliff Mapes was the last player to do so, and oddly enough, he switched to 7, becoming the last Yankee to wear THAT number before Mickey Mantle took it upon his return from the minors in mid-1951.

The Babe was a man of his time. He really did so much for children, as they were even at the hospital when he was fighting for his life, as they were hoping he would just look out the window to just wave. The Babe" ! Was larger than life.

The best to hit homeruns. He was such a nice man too. He will always be missed so much to the baseball world.

New York Yankees
The 1927 New York Yankees had perhaps the most feared line-up in the history of baseball. Nicknamed "Murderers Row, " their batting order boasted the all-time great Babe Ruth at the top of his considerable powers, hitting .356 with a then-record 60 home runs and 164 RBI that year. He was complemented by future Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig at first base, who hit .373 with 47 home runs and a league-leading 175 RBI, Tony Lazzeri at second base who drove in 102 runs with a .309 average, and center fielder Earle Combs, who hit .356 and scored 137 runs as the team's leadoff hitter. Left fielder Bob Meusel also drove in over 100 runs, with a .337 average.

I knew people who saw him play. Some of them even saw him pitch. They're all gone now but I was glad they told me how great he was. When he was on the field he was all business.
