My 100 year old Goerz lenses have even more aperture blades (the "overlapping pieces" that "control the amount of light that is let into the camera") than this one, for a rounder opening. This video should be longer and talk about the glass and coatings used. Film cameras have had focusing mechanisms and apertures since the beginning.
