New 3.0L Duramax Diesel Chevy Silverado: A VERY Detailed Review

Detailed review of the Chevy Silverado 3.0L Duramax Diesel by 16-year producer, presenter and motoring journalist Justin Pritchard. High-Country trim-grade shown.

Recent Chevrolet Silverado models offer 4, 6, and 8-cylinder gasoline engine options, as well as the newly available 3-litre Duramax turbodiesel straight-6 in my tester. This engine provides the same torque output as the mighty 6.2-litre V8 gasoline engine, but with fuel economy like a smaller and less-powerful crossover.

Traded my 5.3 for this 3.0 and no regrets at all love the way it pulls my trailer and mpg.

I've had my 2020 AT4 with the 3.0 for 16 months and have logged 45k so far. One issue with a small leak in the rad which was fixed in a day. Other than that, not a single problem with it since new. And I'm not easy on it either. I hauled a 2k truck camper all over the west last summer in 100deg heat, I've towed sleds, ATV's and boats and I live in NE Wisconsin so it sees a legit winter as well. Never missed a beat so far!

I traded in my 2021 z71 RST 5.3 to a 3.0l same model. Love it. Thank you for the review! Great stuff!

Retired farmer, and have had all sorts of trucks over the years (pretty well all 4X4s) both gas and diesel. This past summer traded from a GMC sierra 5.3 Z71 to a Chevy Silverado RST Z71 3 liter Turbo. Have put about 5000 Ks on it and can honestly say I find no difference in pulling power. Will not win any drag races, but who cares? Being in Canada my worst millage has been about 28 mpg so far this winter. Probably mostly because of remote start warmup. Best checked millage has been about 36 + mpg running about 250 miles mostly on 401 (of course this was trying for the best millage). Average around home (country) driving is about 31 mpg. Now in all fairness none of the above driving included any towing but from past experiences on the farm regarding towing, I don't doubt for a second the capabilities of this engine, transmission combination. As for the transmission, (10 speed) whether through moderate acceleration or flooring it, I can't really feel it shift though I can hear it slightly. At full throttle It makes it's shifts at about 3800 rpm. Having said said all of the above, I would add, I wouldn't trade this truck for anything else out there.

I believe the only reason why you didn't get the ummph from the 3 0l like you felt in 5.3l is the gearing difference between the 8 speed transmission and the 10 speed and different axel ratio. I've seen alot of videos where the 3.0l has beaten the 5.3l in drag race.

FYI DO NOT open the tail gate step part with the hitch in or you will have a nice dent

Haha this little 3.0 ltr is putting out the same torque as my 1999 dodge 5.9 Cummins.... only with less fuel...best I've got on the highway is 19 with that old beast.

I need info on this in the winter in sudbury and northern Ontario can't go ice fishing for a day and come back to a frozen truck that won't start. Is anyone working this truck and using it in the cold. How is it working out for you when you can't plug it in

I wish the displacement was pushed to 3.5 for some added hp and torque.

Does this truck have an exhaust break?

do you think u will get as many miles out of the 1500 dmax as a 2500 dmax i would really like to get the 1500 but haven't heard enough about them to pull the trigger id hte to hve to spend 75k for a 2500 dmax 😩

I been wanting a diesel truck to haul my 2 boats to and from the lake and occasional hauling bigger heavier stuff for landscaping that’s only maybe once a year and also I would like to get best mpg. My Escalade gets like 8 mpg when towing my bass boat or wake boat. Was thinking about the 2500 diesel but I don’t think I need that big since I’m only towing mainly summer time and would want to use as a daily driver. Looking at either this or gmc elevation.

Have a 2021 with 9k in option and didn’t get a sliding rear window or that double tailgate. Last truck in my province so couldn’t be picky. Still scratching my head as why it doesn’t have wireless apple CarPlay wtf

Why would anyone wear a mask driving in a vehicle but especially out in the sticks? Otherwise like the review.
