This is truly the best! I'm vegetarian so I replace pork with mini portabella mushrooms and chicken stock with vegetable stock. Fool proof. I must have made this about 8 times now and it comes out good every single time!

Thanks Marion, I love your videos and recipes. Btw, this is what I learned just now after I tried this recipe, is to REMOVE the BLACK SEEDS inside the SZECHUAN PEPPERCORNS before grinding them because they feel like gritty sand in the mouth. It was my first time using the peppercorns and I had to Google about it while eating this mapo tofu! Great recipe though!

Thank you for the recipe! I had to adjust the recipe for my kids for the spice level and cooked it without the peppercorns since we didn’t have any. I also didn’t have the light/dark soy sauce just regular, but I added some oyster sauce/hoisin sauce instead and a little bit of mirin since my kids like it a little sweet, and it was still good!! At least I had the doubanjiang. Next time I will definitely make it with the peppercorns to take it to the next level! 😊

We love tofu and not having the szchehun pepper corns made it anyway...at least 3 times. 8 months into covid ventured to the Asian market for them... wanted to make the real thing. All the difference, a stellar dish...but then , it's a marion recipe!!!! Thank you. Hugs💕
