As relates to a great time to be alive, I couldn't agree more. I'm 68 years old and love all the tech that has enriched our lives and made them easier. There were no computers, color TVs, mobile smartphones, internet, or AC in the 50s and 60s when I was growing up. The safety of cars, the advent of all the medical miracles, and the dawning of EVs and renewables are very exciting to me. I grew up on the first Star Trek and now I'm living it! I have free supercharging for life on my 2018 Model S and can't wait to complete my solar project at home. Can't imagine the feeling that I'm going to have when I plug the Model S in for the first time once the panels have been installed. Can you imagine my driving a 4, 850 pound automobile wherever I want as much as I want in the country for $0!!?? Yes very great and exciting times Sam...both for the world and me personally 😀

I agree with you Viking, this is the best time to be alive. And you are doing your part to make this a better place.

Sorry Mr.Viking. Tiga is only 3/4 of a mile long not 2 miles.
Its perimeter is closer to 2 miles though

Sam something you said at the end of this video sparked a memory. I don’t know if you are very familiar with California geography but as a child I remember our family driving to Reno Nevada. Going over Donner Pass my Father (always teaching us) said “kids can you imagine coming over this mountain in a covered wagon and horses”? He would make us think! After a while of imagining freezing in the cold. My Father said “be thankful we live in this time”! That was fifty years ago!

Those are plans to expand on the interior space (add lines) at giga Texas. The only major external Contruction is the cathode plant north of the main plaint.

Ford, gm and the rest can only dream of expansion like this. They’re fucked.

A note; the author of that Motor Trend article is Alisa Priddle, former editor of Car and Driver magazine. In 2008, she said pick up truck sales in the United States were poised to fall dramatically. The opposite occured. Her statements are still on line at the Car and Driver you tube site.

Elon said in an interview that the factory in Austin is almost 1 mi long and that in the near future they were going to extend it to be a mile long. He said that about a month ago.

Biggest surprises?
The mega-packs installed in Australia, and even reached national news around the globe in EU!
And huge shipments of mega-packs to Hawaï, to make the coal fired plants obsolete! We need (globally) far more of those…

EV sales in China in June was unbelievable, the country has been in lockdown for more than 2 years (and still in quasi lockdown right now, not completely open yet), economic activities were minimal, plus the recent city wide lock down in Shanghai, I cannot imagine how the Chinese pull it off.

Vertical integration = long term revenue-scalability optimization

Outsourced JIT = short term revenue optimization at the expense of revenue-scalability.

The existing Austin factory is 1200 meters long not 2 miles. That is a huge error Sir Viking.

Gm and Ford are not eating anybody’s lunch motor trend.

Every time you sub something out the sub adds their OH&P markup to the cost. If you do it in house you save the subs markup. This adds up the more you sub out. Plus you have much less control. Vertical integration is much more efficient but it’s not as easy as subbing the work out. It takes more effort but the rewards are huge.

GigaAustin is less than one mile long. Two miles is approximately what you would walk around its perimeter.

I saw a video clip of the latest GM car being assembled. The factory looked like something out of the 1950's and it didn't look like there was much urgency in their pace. So it is not just how big a factory is it also how fast it puts out units.

Everyone uses outsourcing because it is easy and requires less capital risk. If the OEM gets the numbers wrong the supplier is left holding the excess inventory (unless contracted for) and unused capital assets. The OEM doesn't have to plan, hire technical talent, or risk capital investment. This is all great until the parts don't arrive on time or meet specifications.
